This is possibly either a side-effect bug to the now-fixed endless loading issue or just an unpatchable kink with the tool, but bear with me as it’s explained.

Browser specs:  https://aboutmybrowser.com/tw0kXSsC

OS: Windows 10

The problem: Sentence appears, but no mistake to fix is shown by a red highlight.

Cause theory: The tool loads the article as it should, but it’s shown a sentence, Sentence 1, to fix a mistake in that doesn’t have any mistakes in it, so it tries to move the red highlight to a mistake in a different sentence, Sentence 2, while Sentence 1 still displays in the tool despite not having any mistakes, so therefore since the tool doesn’t know what to do, it just sits there even when you try to fix the mistake (which apparently is in Sentence 2) until you force the tool to load another mistake. It’s possible, however, the tool ends up allowing you to “fix” the mistake in Sentence 2 with you putting gibberish on the word, which would lead to vandalism through the spellchecker by good/experienced editors.

Screenshots:

I’ve seen cases here or there where no word gets highlighted but generally once I’ve skipped over those cases, the rest have worked okay – I’m seeing mostly red/highlights right now. Are you getting lots of blanks in a row, or can you estimate how often it’s happening on your side?

I just ran through 12 spellchecks and only now have I gotten a non-highlighted one. I’ll update this post if I start getting more, though.

EDIT: Whoops, I’m actually getting more now. Out of 24 spellchecks, I’ve gotten at least 5 or 6 blanks. :s

Ok, thanks! Getting an idea of frequency will be really helpful, and whether or not it interferes with being able to use the tool for good edits at all.

I do have to be honest that it’s sounding more and more like the Spellchecker is a pretty broken beast - if there are more bugs in the feature than our engineers are able to tackle right now, the solution might be to take the tool down, at least temporarily (if it’s too frustrating for folks to use around the errors… which is understandable!). That’d bum me out, so fingers crossed that it’s something that’s fairly rare, or (a girl can dream) surprisingly easily fixed…!

I was doing spellchecking normally (mostly being “not sure” about how to fix spellings) until I accidentally ran into that first instance. Between 5-20 more spellchecks each time after that got me the other four blanks.

Although I’ve been running spellcheck off and on for a while now, I too have been encountering this problem. It’s gotten better once v2 came in, but it’s still there. However, it’s hard to determine just how many titles it occurs on. Sometimes it’s anywhere from every 3-5 articles and sometimes it’s anywhere from 20-25 articles. The best bet is to have an engineer devote some actual time “skipping” (and making the occasional few edits to a few) words and watching how many articles this happens on.  The length of time between articles varies.

Also, watching and seeing if my eyes could trigger what it could be seeing, it’s happening more often on those with foreign accents - though that may vary on occasion, because the tool is triggering on most words with accents.

Cool! Interesting!
