On August 2, 2018 UTC, Tik Tok (formerly musical.ly) dropped their update to their app and now musical.ly is called Tik Tok.  Anyone who finds the name musical.ly anywhere on wikiHow (whether the article is published or not) should change the word to Tik Tok (meaning rename the page if that name is in the title).  Just be sure to not remove the musical.ly in the image code ([[image:musical.ly]]) or you will break the known image universe (kidding).

I’ve tweaked your post title a little to avoid confusion - Let’s not do a massive call to action until we think through the game plan here:slight_smile:

Our goal is to reach readers based on the help they’re searching for, so even when a platform name changes, we don’t *necessarily* jump right into changing dozens or hundreds of article titles. We want to do it at the right time to make sure people still find the help they’re looking for. That time might be now, or it might not be just yet!

A couple of questions for you, since it sounds like you know a lot about this:

  1. Is the company forcing app updates on people immediately, or will people be changing to the new app gradually?

  2. Are there differences in the app itself? In other words, will the contents of the advice need reviewing and updating, too?

I’ll talk to some folks from the Haus tech team about the change, too, and find out what their thoughts are, based on the information they have about what readers are looking for and our current helpfulness/updated-ness ratings on those topics. It does sound like we’ll want to make some changes here, at least in the long run, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves without a plan:wink:

Thanks Anna!  This is already an issue, as it is making major headlines, and TikTok (musical.ly) announced it in-app.  The interface is mostly the same, just a few tweaks with the layout for now, but they will be adding more effects and features soon:slight_smile:

Oh, I understand that the change has already happened on their end. I’m asking whether they’re forcing app updates in some way, or whether it’ll depend on when people begin updating their apps themselves. Until the majority of people have updated, it’s likely they’ll keep searching for musical.ly, not TikTok. That doesn’t mean we won’t change it soon, but it’s important to consider what readers are actually looking for, before changing dozens of article titles right after a change is announced. I’d be happy to help you (and anyone else interested) with this project once the dust has settled for the change, perhaps in the next week or two. I can pull a list of all musical.ly topics for you from the database, so you can make the text tweaks needed for accuracy:slight_smile:

How about for now, we just update major articles?  @XXvXX updated the title for some of the musical.ly -> TikTok articles (particularly the most popular and the ones without an image).  The musical.ly titles still redirect to the tik tok titles.  Later, we can update the rest.

There’s no need to undo V’s changes, but let’s approach the rest systematically in due course. Next week I can make a list so we can track all the articles, and whether they’ve had text changes and title changes, and whether they need bigger content or visual updates. A methodical approach, once most readers have updated their apps, will help us keep the topics on the same page and make sure nothing is missed, rather than just making a blanket call to action for people to start changing titles immediately and somewhat haphazardly.

Ok @UpsandDowns1234 , I got a chance to pull the info from the database for you, so we can track what’s been done and not done in a more methodical way.

I started with a few merges here, and included the work you and @XxVxX and @RubyRoseRain have already done (thanks!).

@UpsandDowns1234 and any other TikTok/Musical.ly fans, this would be a great opportunity to not only update titles/text for the app name but also see if anything else needs fixing after the update. I’ve left column in the doc for notes about that, if you spot issues that will need addressing - or better yet, if you can test articles as you go!

Thanks @Anna !  I took a look at it.  I thought, should we add a “Demoted?” column to the spreadsheet so we can keep track of which articles are promoted and/or demoted?

Also, @Anna , I added a Quick summary column because only boosters can edit those and boosters may need to change the quick summaries of each of these.

Sounds good, @UpsandDowns1234 !

@99sobi pointed out that the spelling varies even on their own site/app. Sometimes Tik Tok, TikTok, and tiktok… oh annoying inconsistencies!

Since we’re a wiki, the chances that we can stick to just one spelling forever if they use several are probably pretty slim… that being said, we might as well start with one go-to approach, I guess. I poked around the app and think the one used most seems to be “Tik Tok”, so perhaps that’s the one to go with (in which case we might want to loop back and change a few!). Does that seem right to others, or do you see another spelling more often?

Let’s stick with Tik Tok then.  Why?  Because the article wizard adds the appropriate casing to the article (as opposed to Tiktok which is not the correct casing.  Hopefully Kesha will not mind lol

(P.S. unrelated:  do you have a Tik Tok account?  if so, what is it?)

@UpsandDowns1234 Nah this app is way too confusing for me, hah. I just downloaded it to test. I think I’m too old:stuck_out_tongue:

But yes, I think you’re right, and our tech team is on board, too: I think Tik Tok is the way to go:slight_smile:

Great @Anna .  I started posting title change requests on Tik Tok articles that I created to add the space in the middle.  Because there are only about 10 articles that were moved, I’d figure it should not be super hard to add a space in the middle.  But let’s get working !

@UpsandDowns1234   I think I got all of those that were already changed! So if we all do “Tik Tok” from now on, it should be consistent:slight_smile:

Tracking sheet here for anyone who’s game to help:  docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/16QgNUTF7X4-HlqlF-9aH7D19ylIyB9KdWGka_37Cmvg/edit?usp=sharing

I also think @Flickety should create a Tik Tok category because of the number of Tik Tok-related articles.  Musical.Ly can redirect to it if needed, but that is not as high priority as the Tik Tok category.

I added a tag for the status (L = live, D = demoted, T = tagged) so that the article can be better worked on.

Looks like we are through the top 13 articles on the list, just working a bit on it.  Hopefully @Seymour-Edits updates all the musical.ly and changes it to Tik Tok.

I’d say let’s not worry about a category right now @UpsandDowns1234 - Flickety might do so in due course but there’s no rush on that, and if anything it’d be pretty confusing to create that while we’re in the middle of moving pages around.

I know you’re the go-to tester for what needs updating here - are you game to dive in and work some more on changing article text and testing whether additional updates are needed? That way, boosters can go down the list and change titles/summaries for you, with all the details at their fingertips.

let’s test, then!  I will post the results of each of my tests for each article on my cloud storage service (OneDrive).  But I will definitely link to them.  If I cannot do them, then the article ought to be deleted as an impossible task or marked as historical if it used to be possible.

Sure @UpsandDowns1234 - thanks! Feel free to make edits to improve the accuracy on each, too, and note whether it needs any further fixes/updates or whether it’s good to go.
