Videos do not play for me in wikiHow in Chrome. However, they play fine in Safari. Is this a widespread problem or just me? And how can I fix it?

Hey @Noah-Lovelady-Allen - are you talking about wikivids or the embedded videos at the bottom of the articles? I do know there are some devices/browser setups (depending on installed codecs and so on) that don’t play the wikivideos yet, but if you’re on a desktop, I don’t know of a reason why they shouldn’t play in Chrome specifically (I just tested and it worked on mine), so let’s figure out what’s going on:slight_smile:In order to file a bug, I need a bit more info from you: Can you go to this link: http://aboutmybrowser.com/ from both browsers, and give me the resulting links it spits out? The engineers may be able to spot the reason why it’s working in one and not the other (it’s possible that extensions are interfering, or something along those lines). Then can you do a screencast of you playing the video (or not playing, as it were!) so they can see exactly what’s happening. That’ll really help them figure out what’s going on and hopefully fix it if there’s a Chrome-specific problem. If we can get all that info together, I can file a bug and we can see what’s up! Thanks Noah!

In Chrome: https://aboutmybrowser.com/v4d9TiTD In Safari: https://aboutmybrowser.com/2YFSVWR0 Here is a screenshot of the video not playing (in Chrome). https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4n_4OhB3C94V1RJb1dKcnY1bGM/edit?usp=sharing Here is a screenshot of the same video playing (in Safari). https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4n_4OhB3C94a1lOM2pja1pFS0U/edit?usp=sharing Hope this helps!

Cool, thanks Noah! Are you able to play the same video from YouTube itself, on Chrome? From this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gntEi1qwAx4 That’d help us figure out whether it’s to do with YouTube or our side of things:slight_smile:

Oh wow, I didn’t even know it would embed here, hah. If you want to go straight to the YouTube site instead and check it there, that’d be http://youtu.be/gntEi1qwAx4

Hey again @Noah-Lovelady-Allen , I tried the vid in http://www.wikihow.com/Bake-an-Apple-Pie-from-Scratch on an almost identical browser setup (mine is here: https://aboutmybrowser.com/SBP2hOqT ) and was able to play them. Is there any chance you have any kind of ad blocker or other extensions installed that might affect playback? If you could go to Window > Extensions and double-check, that’d be helpful; it might also benefit to take a screenshot of the extension list so the engineers can try to reproduce the same combination, to see what might be interfering (if anything). If you’re not able to see the videos on YouTube or embedded here either, then Google may have more answers for you than we can provide: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/58129?hl=en But if you’re able to see them elsewhere and only having trouble here on the article pages, and don’t have any extensions going, then I’m guessing we have a mystery bug wreaking havoc! I can ask an engineer to take a look and see if we can reproduce it. Sorry for the blank boxes in the meantime!

I do have an ad blocker, but I’ve tried whitelisting wikiHow, and that didn’t help. Here are my extensions: AdBlock (with wikiHow whitelisted) Auto Refresh Plus Boomerang for GMail Controlled Multi-Tab Browsing GChat Pix GIF Scrubber Google Dictionary Google Mail Checker Google+ Notifications HTTPS Everywhere LongURL Lucidchart Diagrams - Desktop PanicButton Prevent Duplicate Tabs Reload All Tabs Tab for a Cause Tab Number Time Warp Universal Search I don’t see how any of these could be the source of my problem. The video works fine on YouTube. Also, I can’t see the video here in the forum that you say embedded. Just looks like a bunch of blank lines.

Oh wow, lots of extensions. I definitely agree with you that they *shouldn’t* interfere with playback, but with those being the big differences between yours and my setups, it’s worth checking - various contributors have found rogue extensions to be the source of some issues like this in the past (and there’s not much we can do about that from our side of things). If the videos aren’t playing here in the forums either, I suspect the issues might be related, and therefore isn’t necessarily down to the wikiHow coding – we don’t do anything to “tweak” the forums here; we just use the Vanilla backbone. So if on both the forums and the articles, the videos aren’t playing, I reckon you might have something going on with your personal browser setup. Maybe it’s worth disabling the extensions to see if they play after that? Sorry that I’m not being more helpful in getting an immediate fix! It’s just that, since I can play them on the same setup and you can play them in another browser, it seems like there might be an issue with your particular combination of extensions or settings:confused:

I don’t have time right now, but I’ll try disabling them one by one until it works. Once I figure it out, I’ll post something here.

The extension was HTTPS Everywhere, I just turned off YouTube encryption and it worked. I guess embedding doesn’t use encryption but HTTPS Everywhere still recognizes it as YouTube, so it tries to encrypt it as it would a YouTube video at youtube.com .

Ah I see! I’m glad you figured it out - sorry for the hassle of having to try each extension; I know that’s a bummer! But I’m glad you were able to hunt it down:slight_smile:
