Welcome to the wikiHaus Lab update! Here’s what’s new for April 22nd:
What’s happening? We officially have a wikiHow blog! This is the very start of the blog, but we have high hopes for this to turn into another great source of information and entertainment for wikiHow readers. A blog is a great way for us to tell stories and share knowledge that doesn’t necessarily fit in an article style. It’s perfect for topics that are timely; like what’s trending right now, what’s happening in the world, and how that connects to what’s happening on wikiHow. You can check out the blog here
!
What’s happening? We’re working to have wikiHow articles featured on Google News. The new “ Relationship News
” category is an experimental page for pulling a range of articles that might be a good fit for Google news together in one place. The goal is to have selections of articles on relationships, tech, home and garden, personal care, and style and fitness that can be used. At this stage, we’re not sure if we’ll continue to use the category pages or a different system to house these, but we’ll keep you posted! Please feel free to suggest articles you think would be good for any of these categories to Chris H
. He’s looking for a mix of timely and evergreen articles that are especially well done and up-to-date.
You may have noticed:A new tab for the Pro Membership has been added to the menu at the top of wikiHow pages. The team has also updated the ‘Explore’ menu to move ‘Help’ up above the category listings.

I saw the new tab earlier!

And I actually replied an hour ago but something happened.
I’m curious - if the blog does well and takes off, would it be possible for volunteers to submit guest posts? I could see it being a really neat resource for certain types of community co-authors, or for encouraging people to sign up and contribute.

I had considered the same question! Personally, I think that sounds like a great idea, but will be able to let you know more when the blog is a little further along

If we are going to have a on-wikiHow based blog, please consider taking down the Tumblr-based version of the blog here
- which can be found on the “Follow Us On” and which hasn’t been updated since September 12, 2018!

Jesus, I forgot about that.
That does make me think, though - the audience on Tumblr vs. WordPress (where the blog is hosted) is different. WordPress seems to be primarily used by businesses and adults running personal blogs, but while Tumblr’s userbase has pretty sharply declined, most of the active users seem to be teens and young adults. Back when I used it, I distinctly remember the Denny’s account being noteworthy specifically for how well an advertising account meshed with Tumblr culture. (And Tumblr was also a massive safe haven for minorities - heck, I just found a post saying that #ActuallyAutistic
, #ActuallyADHD
, #BlackTumblr
, and so forth jumped into the top 20 tags by the end of 2020
.) I’m wondering if there might be some kind of use for the Tumblr that could specifically support minority communities and/or a younger audience, rather than just kind of screaming into the void of Twitter or the like… Would it be a waste of energy since the site has lost so much of its userbase?
There’s a random question for the social media team.
