Welcome to the wikiHaus Lab update! Here’s what new for August 12th:
What’s happening? The team is working on updating category pages to look more like the new relationships
page we have. Top categories will have the most noticeable changes with a large header and then tiles underneath, and subcategories will likely just have the tiles.
Who’s working on it?Bebeth is working on implementing these designs.
What’s the goal of this? This is more of a design refresh, with the content on the category pages staying the same. As we work to keep readers on wikiHow longer, having clean, fresh category pages will ideally make it easier to find and select more articles to read.
What’s happening?Testing different display styles for articles in the Related wikiHows section. We’re going to take some styles that were originally designed for banners, and see if they work well for Related wikiHows. To start, there will be two different styles implemented across around 40% of articles. I’ll pop a sneak peek of the options below. Do you like one of these, or prefer the way we have them now?
Who’s working on it?Scott is implementing these changes.
What’s the goal of this? The goal here is to see if we can increase engagement with the Related Articles section by implementing fresh new designs.
Coming up:Linh-Tran is working on a redesign for headers of methods and parts sections for mobile. We’re excited for an update on these!
You may have noticed:The “like” feature is officially live on list articles! Yes, it counts the likes in real time and you can click to like or to remove an accidental like. I like it
Pro tip: If we need to reset the number of likes, changing the first sentence of a step will reset the count

Even I like the one with the “Read Now” button. Don’t like the other one, though…

I actually prefer the numbered tabs. It’s aesthetically cleaner and less cluttered; the colored section of the tab makes it feel like it’s balancing the image on the right. The “Read Now” version feels like there’s too much “weight” in that section of the design, especially since article visuals tend to use way less saturated colors!
(I also have a mild dislike of any site that asks
me to read their content, because the page should naturally catch reader interest somehow. I don’t want to feel like I’m being pleaded into looking at it!)

As long as category pages will still have a text-only list mode, i dont care whats done to category pages at this time.

Numbered tabs ftw. “Read Now” kinda has a weird clickbait vibe to it

I came across one of the Related wikiHows tests in the wild and I don’t know if I like the change, because it’s cutting off any titles that are medium-length or longer.
I can’t speak for the readers, but personally, I prefer not having to look at a URL or click links to know what I’m going to be reading about. lol

I agree, with Alex. I think although I like the way “Read now” format looks, I think something like “Learn now” or a link that we can directly click on (the way how we have it now) would be better, thinking from this perspective.
Yes, cutting off any titles that are medium-length or longer looks a little confusing and I think
readers may not understand exactly what they’ll read by clicking on them. Anyways, I just found both formats in the wild:
Great update, visually. Always up for oomphing aesthetic appeal. I like the numbered one. If I want to open all one by one, I might remember the article by its number.Well done wikiHausers.

I did see last week that you can like or comment on some article pictures. I saw the like was working, but the comments said “coming soon”. Is it available now? I don’t see it for some articles. It would be a pretty cool feature to see if the picture is helpful and what people think of it.
. No rush, though. I’ll let the wikiHausers do their thing.

Yeah, that doesn’t seem ideal! I’m sure they had to make a call on how many characters were included, but there’s a lot of guessing going on here! Passing this feedback back to the team working on it, thanks Alex

The only feature live is the like option. The comment feature has not been built out yet.
