Welcome to our new series on What’s Cooking in the wikiHaus lab! These posts will go over some of the experiments and tests happening in-Haus. There’s always a lot of innovative ideas being thought up to help keep wikiHow relevant and top of mind for our readers, so here we’ll go over some that are being implemented. Here are a few of the projects the wikiHaus is working on right now:

1. What’s happening?

Experimenting with updating some introductions to add more personality. You can find an example here .

Who’s working on it?

Chris-H is heading this project, so you can see the tone of voice he is adding to some of these.

What’s the goal of this?

The goal of these tweaks is to help make introductions more catchy and to connect with readers a little more, so it pulls them into the article further. We think a more friendly and empathetic tone might make wikiHow more helpful to readers, who often are using wikiHow to solve frustrating or difficult problems. We also hope that the more engaging intros improve click-through rates in Google search. If you’d like to work making some catchy intros of your own, feel free to share them with Chris who can add them to our tracking :)

  1. What’s happening?

Content editors are removing expert green boxes and incorporating information back into the article content. Sometimes, it’s as simple as just adding a citation because the information was already stated within the content! You can see an example of this here

Who’s working on it?

Carrie heads up the content team, with Britt, Sean and others working to move content around within articles.

What’s the goal of this?

It seems that readers weren’t responding to expert green boxes and that they were potentially problematic for mobile readers, so combining the content back in will hopefully make it easier for readers to simply follow the article steps.

  1. What’s happening?

Over the last couple of weeks, some work has been going on in the background to see if we can move the current wikiHow Forums to a new platform. The initial testing was completed last week and now we officially know that we can move from Vanilla to Discourse.

Who’s working on it?

Gaurang is the primary engineer working on all the backend details, with Emily and myself helping out. Gaurang is the perfect person to handle this project because he was a community member for over 7 years before joining the team! We are also excited to ask for input from the community as soon as it gets to a point where it can be tested and we need to make some decisions.

What’s the goal of this?

The goal of changing to the Discourse platform is two-fold. The first is about security and safety of the forums. Our current Vanilla integration is custom and very complex, which makes it difficult to upgrade, leaving the current version pretty out of date. With the new platform, we can easily and quickly update the software whenever needed as it will be hosted on Discourse. This alone will make our engineers much happier! The second point is that it will allow for a much-needed refresh and modernization of the forums. There are a range of simple features like emojis, drag and drop images, and the ability to ‘like’ a post that I think we will enjoy :)

On the new forums platform, will there be a way to flag posts directly in the forums instead of reporting it to the ANB? While it’s not that difficult to report posts on the ANB, it is somewhat time consuming and tedious, and I think that having the ability to flag a post directly in the forums would make the process easier.

Also, will all of our old discussions carry over?

Woo, we get to see the news! This is exciting, and I’m really happy to see this:slight_smile:

I’m curious as to whether our discussions will be ported over, too. I don’t think too many people would be devastated if we lost them, but there’s a few that I’ve used for more meta-wiki articles, like on starting a project on wikiHow, and I want to know if I need to archive them.

Another question… how does the removal of expert greenboxes translate to community co-author greenboxes? I have some greenboxes up on the LGBT+ topics, and my greenboxes are more of the personal experience type, which can’t really be cited and could be more important on self-discovery types of topics. I actually remember Anna reaching out to me on Halle’s behalf at one point because the addition of my greenboxes had taken the helpfulness up by 13%, and even though that exact figure hasn’t stuck, it looks like the general helpfulness improvement has. (It’s still almost 10% higher than it was prior to the greenbox addition.)

@R2_d2000 the ability to flag within the new forums is possible, so that could be something that we can decide as a group whether to have it available for all users.

There will definitely be some migration of discussions, and that’s something that we will discuss in depth in a dedicated thread it comes time to think about the details. We’re close to having the background engineering side at a point where we can work together on deciding what we want as a community :)

@Galactic-Radiance that’s a great point, and I believe we can keep your greenboxes - like you said, they’re a bit different in nature. I will message you separately to coordinate.

Glad to hear about the forum upgrade!  Will there be support for “wikitext” in the forums?

*Sigh of relief*

So, I guess this means we won’t be forking?

I guess not. Like I said, forking should be a last resort.

I tend to keep track of my current discussions, and as long as I can get back to them on the Vanilla server of the forums, I’m good. If they can be moved over to Discourse, even better. Just show me how I can get email updates on Discourse and I’ll be all set there.

Otherwise, sounds good. Now I know what this deal with expert information that seems cryptic to me is - I knew the references had dates, but I didn’t know what the rest of the code meant, and felt something was up - and now I know.

Not too sure how I feel about the more energetic intros. Haven’t been able to check out the link you shared. Been seeing only a few out there which doesn’t blend well with all of the rest, but oh well!

@Awesome-Aasim not that I know of!

@Byankno1 glad to help give some clarity to those edits, and any feedback on those intros is welcome :)

Nice to hear what’s going on! The introduction tweaking seems to be an interesting project. From the example, I’m guessing it’s okay to use some minimal first person if you’re using the perspective of the site as a whole? Ohh, so that’s why the greenboxes were being removed? I was wondering why when I patrolling so many edits like that. Makes sense to just cite the existing information rather than restating it. The forums news is intriguing; new features sound fun! I’m glad the move would allow the engineers to implement any updates more easily. Thanks for keeping us updated, Jayne! I look forward to any future changes!

@HelperOnWikihow Yes, we’re trying a little bit of first person plural in these where it seems appropriate. The main goal is make the introduction feel empathetic, warm and friendly, and first person can sometimes help with that.

@Chris-H I usually used first-person plural before I learned that it’s better to use second person, but now I think a bit of first person plural would be helpful in creating a friendly, empathetic tone in articles, especially intros.

Ooh, thanks for the update! Will there be more posts like this, @JayneG

And I guess I’ll miss Vanilla when we move to Discourse…:stuck_out_tongue:

Oh, and what will happen to the old forums?  We have more than 100000+ comments that need to be moved over.  Will the forums be “archived” permanently?

And I look forward to a feature that allows deleting our own comments.  We all have made the mistake of posting in the wrong thread.  That embarrassment takes up forum space in the form of “[deleted]” or “[redacted]”.  That is one thing I wish should be there now :\

This looks interesting! Thanks for the update!

@WikiaWang yes, this is just the first of the series!

@Awesome-Aasim more in-depth details and discussion to come on migration and archiving. And yep, I believe everyone will have the ability to delete their own comment or thread in discourse:slight_smile:

Keep me posted on the migration process…

I’m glad you are keeping us posted on what’s happening in the wikiHaus, @JayneG ! The migration process seems like it will be a tedious but extremely beneficial project that will further the helpfulness of the forums. I’m also glad that everyone will be able to delete comments/threads in the upcoming Discourse migration, I have experienced the embarrassment of posting in the wrong thread one too many times…LOL

Thanks for the update Jayne! It’s really nice to know what’s happening:slight_smile:

Um , I’m new , so I have no idea what dis is
