Beware… Fun/silly post ahead. Not to be taken too seriously, so skip over it if you’re not in a whimsical mood:wink:

@TheArtsPerson and I got talking about Harry Potter the other day, and they asked me what house I’m in (Hufflepuff, obvi)… It got me looking at the traits of those houses and thinking about where various friends fit in. Inevitably, I then started thinking about my wikiFriends and how different people here gravitate towards different main wiki activities… We touched on that when we talked about our favorite tools the other day.

In our case, I think it’s probably more about interests and hobbies than personality traits, buuuut it’s kind of fun to think about. Here’s the breakdown I came up with… based totally on anecdotal experiences and musings, not even a teensy bit scientific:wink:

wikiHow’s “Houses”:

Guardians of the Wiki - these are the protectors of all we hold dear on the wiki. Patrolling Recent Changes is the most obvious tool they use, but many also help out with other ‘quality guarding’ tools like QG, Category Guardian, Picture Patrol, Tech Feedback, and more. Some also handle less fun but necessary tasks like page protections and blocks. As a guardian, you help review, curate, and filter new ideas on the wiki, making sure any addition helps us move the mission forward. Without you, readers would be confused and misled by spammers and vandals, and wouldn’t trust what we do here.

Counts of Content - these are the article starters and bold editors and de-stubbers. Many, but not all, have a particular topic niche they love to work in to share their knowledge and experience with the world. If you’re a Content Count or Countess, you probably hang out on the Create Page or in Article Requests, the Topic Greenhouse, or even deep within the category tree, shining up your favorite category areas. Without you, readers wouldn’t have new articles to read or good advice to absorb.

Ambassadors of the Realm - these people are wikiHow’s friendly face, but their commitment and contribution goes deeper than just saying “hey” to new folks. They help newbie readers and editors on the Help Team Page, Article Review Page, and through tools like RCP and NAB. If this is you, you probably spend a lot of time answering wiki-related questions to help others wikiHowians along, and perhaps editing to help save good contributions from reverts or demotions when they need a little wiki tweaking but contain some super advice. Through these actions, you not only save helpful additions but teach and empower new editors to share their know-how effectively and widely. Without you, our community wouldn’t grow and thrive.

Wiki Wizards - these are the people who do the little things that might go unnoticed when they’re taken care of… but would hit us all like a ton of bricks if they weren’t! Being a Wiki Wizard often goes hand in hand with the wikiGnome mentality. As a Wizard, you fix broken links and broken images, correct template and wikiText errors, and go deeper by formatting, cleaning up, and merging pages. You handle the ‘behind the scenes’ magic, and without you, readers would soon find our wiki to be a big ol’ mess of broken links and poorly worded articles and duplicated or missing content.

What do you guys think? Do you fit anywhere in one of these houses or teams? Or a mix? Got another “Team” you see yourself on that I haven’t dreamt up here?

I would say I am a:

Guardian of wiki

Ambassadors of Realm

Another wikiWonderful discussion. I’d love to read what everyone posts. These name tags are deep and the responsibilities are many. I don’t do most of the things mentioned. But I’d choose Guardians of wiki and Ambassadors of Realm. What I do from these houses is care for wikiHow, try to understand the editors’ perspective, be my best helpful self, and keep an eye on the RCP count. Why? Because I have evolved as a human from too strict and closed a mind to someone who can be patient, less nervous at the sight of a notification, found affection in the literary geniuses, found really nice people, found helpful information, and a place that’s like a roller coaster ride - one day you get a kudos and the next day you find out what you missed/your errors. It’s amazing. I want to guard wikiHow’s image and never hurt ANY wikiEditor.

@Anna , does this mean you’re McGonagall and that Jack is Dumbledore?

I stole that from @Zodiaw so full credit goes to them

I think I am a:

Ambassadors of the Realm

Wiki Wizards

I am a Ravenclaw myself in Hogwarts.

@Ruah and @Vishshua Me too, I think! Probably mostly the latter (Ambassador), but I can get fairly Guardian-y with those spammers…

@Galactic-Radiance Lol, she seems too important. Maybe I’m Hagrid?? I could get a bike and do mediocre accidental magic. I feel comfortable with that.

What about you two? @Zodiaw I’m guessing is a Wiki Wizard and a Guardian (sorry, you don’t get to pick, decided for you based on #facts … though you do dive into Content Count areas, too, when inspiration strikes, so I could perhaps be swayed, maybe). @Galactic-Radiance - a mix of all? Or do you identify more with one?

Hm, personally I’d say I’m more of a mix of three - Guardian, a Count of Content, and Wiki Wizard, with a more heavy leaning towards a Count (I make a bunch of revisions that unfortunately go unfinished and sometimes never get published, oops). But if I had to pick just one, that would be something that the Sorting Hat would have to decide for me because I wouldn’t know where I’d end up:stuck_out_tongue:

(My actual Harry Potter house is Ravenclaw, because why not.)

@Galactic-Radiance and @MattheusG   - Ravenclaw, of course, should have known ;)

Yeah, Alex, you’re a watcher who sees all on the wiki so from that point of view you end up somewhat on all of the teams, buuut I think your topic deep dives reveal you as a Count of Content at heart.

We def need a Sorting Hat. And - what are those house emblems called? - Crests? Flags? We should get some of those.

Ambassadors of the Realm

Totally! With the Crest and flags.

@Anna I’m kind of a little of everythin’! Some days more so than others.

I’m guessing I’d be a Guardian-Wizard hybrid who has a far Content Count ancestor then:smiley:

I wonder what our Sorting Hat would look like - a wikiGreen bobble hat?

Also, I tried finding an animal and a colour for each house’s crest, this is my attempt after five seconds of googling colour symbolism:

Guardian of the Wiki: red (power and speed) - bear

Counts of Content: purple (wisdom and transformation) - owl

Ambassadors of the Realm: yellow (joy and idealism) - dog

Wiki Wizard - white (humility and precision) - bee

Bonus house: Code Elf (aka the engineers). They’re wise and mysterious and a rare sight to see, but they possess an ancient type of magic that controls the very fabric of the reality of our wikiKingdom. Black (sophistication and anonymity) - raven

@Zodiaw omg you win this thread. I <3 that.

Me right now as yellow dog ambassador pup friend:

GG @Zodiaw

Probably count of content for me, though I kinda like to dabble into Ambassadors of the Realm and Wikiwizards too.

I would say that I’m a Guardian of the Wiki.

I think I most fall into the Guardian of the wiki but I also do the other categories. So a mix but I’ll be a guardian, it sounds cool. :)

Yess @XxVxX … the Countess of Travel Content, perhaps, at least at the moment:slight_smile:

@R2_d2000 Guardian sounds right to me! Thwarting those subtle spammers with their phone number scams. Plus maybe a bit of Wiki Wizardry, too, eh?

@InfernoTerra You’ve had your Count of Content moments for sure, with your recipes… but I think you’re right about your Guardian core. Maybe with a little bit of Ambassador, too, since you want to spread the wiki gospel to strangers at every meetup:stuck_out_tongue:

Now I reckon we need an artist to make Zodiaw’s ideas a wiki reality.

Ravenclaw here! And I’d really like to see illustrations of these (it’s not necessary, but is it fun? yes it is. whenever I become a good enough artist eventually…). Reminds me of DnD.

I like the idea of a Wiki Wizard because fixing grammar flow and text errors are something I love to do. Plus, it’s quick. And who doesn’t want to be a wizard? Going along with the Harry Potter discussion, that is.
