Hey guys! I thought it was kind of odd that it is required for the “Things You’ll Need” section in recipe How-tos to be at the bottom. I was thinking it would make more sense for it to be on the top right under the “Ingredients” section. Please post your ideas- I heard that it has been decided against this idea in the past.

Ingredients are at the top… because you’re going to cook with them, and the process of cooking isn’t rocket science. Things you’ll need however, will only be something you want to look at AFTER you’ve determined the steps aren’t too difficult for you to follow.
Oh, that makes sense. I figured that it should be at the top so that you can know if you have the materials- I think that goes along with knowing if the steps are doable. If you look through the whole thing, decide to do it, and then realize you don’t have the materials, it will be pointless. That’s why I thought it would be better for them to be at the top; still, your point also makes sense… What does anyone else think?
I entirely agree with you, Lielie1017, but this discussion has been done many, many times and the community has come to the conclusion that that’s how it’s gonna be done, so there. Lois,
And that cuts both ways; you might not want to read the steps until you’re sure you’ll be able to obtain the things you’ll need, in some cases. That’s why I’m in favour of a flexible policy around this.
That’s what I was saying- that you want to know if you’ll have all the ingredients! Thanks for supporting me. I am aware that this discussion has been done a lot, but I thought it was so silly that I wanted to TRY to get everyone else to see my (our) point of view. Anyone else have an opinion about this?

Sometimes what people do is make the first step instructing the reader to make sure they have all the things they need, listed below. I agree though that some flexibility would be nice. If you use advanced editor, and there is an article where having the “things you’ll need” in the beginning is justifiably important, you can try putting the section there. Someone else might move it based on our formatting guidelines, but perhaps not.

I reckon that it should be at the top, I agree with
Eh, shouldn’t the person read everything thoroughly before running out and getting everything they need only to find out that the actual task is beyond their abilities? I say it should stay at the bottom. The format also looks better that way.
Well, yeah they should. But it’s kinda the same with ingredients. Does this mean that they should read it thoroughly before “running out and getting” all the ingredients? Just because it’s posted at the top doesn’t mean you need to get them first, it just helps you be like “Oh, I don’t have this so what’s the point in reading the article?” It seems like a lot of you guys support the idea. I wonder what others think…
I was just looking over the views and replies- if you view please try to comment- I really think this would be a useful change, so I need to know what others think.

I think it should stay where it is. It works fine, and it follows with most other how-to sites and directions.
Alright. We seem to be half-and-half, four people (including me) want it and three don’t, but since I know we decided against this in the past, I’m fine just leaving it where it is. I just thought it would make more sense at the top… Still, it seems like many of us think it should be at the top. About what Catspjs01 said:
Yes, that’s true but I think it could be more efficient at the top. You can look at previous comments to see my reason for thinking this.
No one is commenting anymore! I still think that we should keep on discussing… right now more people want it on the top than on the bottom.

This discussion ended. Please don’t bump it.
Why hasn’t anyone closed this yet?

You don’t need to keep commenting on a thread until someone notices and closes it. The discussion simply ends, and this thread moves on.

Actually, very few people want it on the top.
