I announced
back in November that I’d be developing
a greasemonkey script
for use on wikiHow. It is designed to help the experienced editor get information quickly without having to open a second tab or look through pages of Special Pages. Well, I’m excited to say that I’m nearing close to a working alpha version. This initial version will focus on the Welcome Team, showing only users who have not been welcomed after they have made an edit to wikihow
. If you would like to help test this script, please reply in this forum. Here are the qualifications:
- Must already be on the welcome team
and have an established history
- Established user
- personalized welcome template preferred, but not required
In order to use the script, you must be using Firefox with the Greasemonkey extension. Please no Chrome or Opera users. It’s hard enough to code for Firefox without having to worry about other browsers. I’ll only be accepting a small number of testers, so do not be offended if I don’t choose you. This is purely for logistical reasons. (Then again, the source is open so you are more than welcome to install it but do not expect me to “support” you during alpha-testing.) I’m scheduling the alpha release for sometime at the end of Feb to early March. I don’t have a release date yet, so please don’t ask.

Wow, cool, thanks for the amazing efforts! I suppose if you have to ask what’s Greasemonkey, then you’re out.
Hope it all goes swimmingly.

I am not a welcomer (although I know what GreaseMonkey is…sounds great!

Ttrimm, I wanted to get people who were already doing it to test it out. Sorry.
The next feature is to show the number of edits an IP address has made in the last 24 hours when you hover over their IP. This is so it’s easier to tell if a possible vandal has been particularly active.

Wow, awesome work Mike
Thanks for your efforts setting this up! I use the wikiHow toolbar for Chrome, but I’m sure Firefox users will enjoy having this feature.

How do you get the wH toolbar feature?

This is the toolbar I use: https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/anidieghjbnghobpjjahnibfgiopohce

Here’s the link to the “original” toolbar for Firefox. http://www.wikihow.com/Use-the-wikiHow-Editor’s-Toolbar
I’ve been using it, and I like it.

@Progressive
: The GM script is not a replacement for the toolbar, even though I don’t use the toolbar. (I don’t like browser clutter.) The GM script is meant to provide an easier interface. For example, in this particular alpha, when you click on the talk link to welcome a new user, it would show a text box instead of forwarding you to the talk page of the user.

Ah, I see…and it’s great to have something like this available. I don’t use Firefox very often (just a personal preference) and the Chrome “toolbar” version actually isn’t exactly a toolbar - it’s sort of a widget that monitors RC “weather”, as well as a new message and unpatrolled FA indicator, all in one. It also has the welcoming script. Either way, I’m tempted to use Firefox for a bit just to check out your wH script.
Awesome work, Mike, this will be super helpful when it’s released
I’d love to test this out. Greasemonkey is awesome! I got all da requirements down.
Cool. Can I try it when you get it ready?

Thanks everyone for your support. I’m hoping to have the alpha release soon. I’ll contact testers via their talk page within 24 hours of the release.

I didn’t get the number of people I was expecting so I’ll just do a release. If you plan on installing the script, please read this guide
on submitting bug reports. I’ll be doing a last code inspection on Tuesday afternoon and hopefully releasing Tuesday evening.
