15 January 2021 is a special day. Wikipedia, wikiHow’s older distant cousin, is turning 20. And wikiHow is turning 16. Why is it important?

Wikipedia has revolutionized the concept of a wiki. Earlier experiments with editable websites were conducted before, including with Nupedia, but none has ever gotten as far as Wikipedia. The MediaWiki code has evolved, too, gaining new features deemed necessary later on. wikiHow is a site inspired by the wiki model and largely embraces it too. The result is that wiki sites have gotten far more popular than non-wiki sites for certain fields.

As we can clearly see, the wiki model has aged very well. Wikis are probably the future of the free Internet. Instead of having professional writers writing articles, we have professionals in specific fields. Wikis have largely strove for fact and truth. People were encouraged to help. Twenty years later, both Wikipedia and wikiHow are some of the most trustworthy sites on the Internet. Even more trustworthy than some news sites.

So kudos to both you wikiHowians and everyone working on the MediaWiki software. Without your work, we would not be here to have this discussion today.

Early celebration!
