Of course, that doesn't mean there aren't bumps or hurdles. It just means that when you get to those hurdles, you work together to figure it out, because it's you and them against your problems, not you vs. them.

Congratulations on finding a love that's true! For more info on what true love looks like, check out these helpful resources:

What is true love?

Pretty much everyone yearns for a love that’s true. One that lasts forever, and which never fades. But what does that mean, anyway?

What is “true love” anyway?
It depends on who you ask, but most people would tell you that true love is love that’s lasting, resilient, and healthy. It comes in many forms, both romantic and platonic, and it’s something that, once you find it, you should never let it go.

How do you know if it’s really true love?
Again, true love looks different for everyone, but there are some classic traits and signs to look for if you want to know if you’ve found The One. Check out these characteristics of true love:

  • True love involves mutual respect. You and your partner both see and accept each other for who you are, and treat each other as people, with beliefs, opinions, and emotions.
  • True love involves a profound connection. What that connection looks like varies, but when you love someone, you become closer to them than other people. You understand and relate to each other on a deeper level.
  • True love requires trust. You and your partner aren’t jealous, possessive, or suspicious. You respect each other’s agency and trust each other to make the right decisions without being tested.
  • True love encourages growth. People change, and that’s natural. When you’re in love, you’ll want your partner to become the best person they can be, and you’ll encourage them to grow and change, and they’ll do the same for you.
  • True love is resilient. Every relationship has its hurdles and setbacks, even true love. But if the love is real, you’ll be able to navigate those challenges without falling apart.
  • True love is accepting. If you love your partner, you’ll take them as they are, jagged edges and all. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t improve, just that you don’t require them to be someone they’re not.

What is the 2 2 2 love rule?
The 2 2 2 love rule is the idea that couples should go on a date every 2 weeks, a weekend trip every 2 months, and a week-long trip every 2 years. It’s a nice schedule for bonding with your partner, but it’s not one-size-fits-all, and may not be helpful for every relationship.

How do you know if someone truly loves you, and how do you know if you truly love someone?
We already touched on the characteristics of love above, but if you want a simple guide, ask yourself this: If that person were to tell you that they wanted to break up tomorrow to date someone new, how would you feel? You’d probably feel bad (and if you don’t, then there are other problems), but if you loved them, you’d want the best for them, and for them to be happy, and so you’d let them go. We’re not saying it’d be easy or fair, but hey, that’s love!

Do I love them or am I just attached? Great question! The difference between love and infatuation is possession. True love isn’t possessive or jealous. You can be away from them without getting selfish or suspicious (even if it aches). Infatuation, on the other hand, is pure possession—you want them to be yours, and nobody else’s.
