Updating Your Primary Phone Number

  1. You can change your primary phone number in the
    iPhone Settings App Icon
Settings app on your iPhone. Use this method to change the primary number that you use to sign in to your Apple Account. [1]
    • This method will only work if you used a phone number to create your Apple Account instead of an email address. If you signed up with an email address, you can add or remove phone numbers, but you won’t be able to set one as your primary number.
  2. You’ll see your Apple Account name at the very top of the Settings menu.

  3. You’ll see this option near the top of the screen.
  4. It should say Primary phone number beneath it.
  5. This is a blue link at the bottom of the page.
    • If the number is associated with iMessage or Facetime, you may need to remove it from those services before you continue. To do so, go to Settings > Apps > Messages and toggle iMessage off. Then, go to Settings > Apps > FaceTime and toggle FaceTime off.
      • Alternatively, visit this page and have a confirmation code sent to your number to deregister it from iMessage and FaceTime.
    • To keep the number attached to your account but stop using it as your primary number, toggle off Primary Phone Number .
  6. When you remove your primary number (or toggle off its Primary Phone Number status), you’ll be prompted to choose a new primary number. Follow the prompts on the screen to do so now.
    • You can either enter a new number or choose one of the numbers already connected to your Apple Account.
    • At this point, you may be prompted to enter a code to verify that you want to deregister your old number.
  7. You may receive a text at your new number with a verification code. Enter the code when prompted.
    • You may not get a verification code if the number you selected is already connected to your Apple Account in some way (e.g., as a Messages number or a Trusted Number).
  8. In some cases, you might be unable to deregister your old phone number because you don’t have access to it anymore. For example, this might happen if someone else now owns that number, or if the iPhone connected to that number has been lost or stolen. In this situation, you can use a primary email instead of a phone number.
    • Go to Settings > [Your name] > Sign-In & Security .
    • Select your current primary phone number.
    • Toggle off Primary Phone Number .
    • Select Add New Primary Phone or Email . You may also be given the option to select an email address already linked to your Apple Account.
    • Tap Existing Email Address to enter an address you already own, or New iCloud Email Address to set up a new iCloud email.
    • Follow the instructions to verify your new email address.
    • If you use this method, you can still add a new phone number to your Apple Account. It just won’t be the primary method for signing into your Apple Account.

Getting a New Phone Number

PDF download Download Article
  1. The only way to get a new phone number is to have a new one assigned to you by a wireless provider . If you haven't already done so, contact your carrier to request a new phone number or line, or switch to a new carrier. Your carrier will either provide a physical SIM card that, when inserted, assigns the new number to your iPhone, or you can have them add it to your eSIM. To contact your carrier, dial 611 .
    • If your iPhone is not unlocked , you may not be able to use a SIM card from another carrier.
  2. If you receive a physical SIM card for your new phone number, inserting it will add the phone number to your iPhone. [6]

    • If they set up eSIM Carrier Activation on your phone, you'll see a pop-up message that says Carrier Cellular plan ready to Be Installed —tap the message, open the Settings app, tap Carrier Cellular Plan Ready to Be Installed , then follow the on-screen instructions. [7]
    • The carrier may also send you an activation link that walks you through the process or have you scan a QR code that adds your settings.

My iPhone was destroyed in a car accident, and I have a new one coming. How do I start over?
    Snakey006550
    Top Answerer
When you get your new iPhone, turn it on and follow the on-screen instructions. During setup, you’ll be asked to sign in with your Apple ID. If you have a recent iCloud backup, you can restore your data by selecting "Restore from iCloud Backup" and signing in to your Apple ID. If you don’t have a backup, you can start fresh by choosing "Set Up as New iPhone." You can also restore from an iTunes backup if you made one before your old phone was damaged. Once everything is set up, don’t forget to enable Find My iPhone and set up any other preferences like passwords and notifications.
