My horse is an 8 year old Shetland and she isn’t saddle broken but when I ride her bareback, she nips her back. Why?

Shetland ponies, because they are so small, have a weight limit of about 65 pounds. When we are on horses or ponies, we are sitting on their spine, that is supported by the pony's tummy muscles. You could be making her back very sore and painful. The nipping is her way of telling you that she is in pain. I recommend that you consider buying or leasing out a pony or horse that is over 13 hands tall. If you are about 120-130 lbs., then something about 14 hands and over. If you are over 150 pounds, then a horse that is over 15 hands is usually necessary.
