The cheapest and the easiest way to do this in most situations is water changes. The solution to pollution is dilution. Protein skimming can also eliminate compounds that contribute to algae formation from the water.

  • Question
What can I do about a white frost stain inside the tank from water?
    Community Answer
Snails will eat the white stuff off the sides of the tank, but don't get snails if you have live plants in your tank that you wish to keep. Also, you could get a magnetic aquarium glass cleaner. The magnet attaches from both sides of the glass so you can clean the tank from the outside.
  • Question

    Community Answer
It could be the fact that it is in direct sunlight, or your leaving the light on too long. Nerite snails are the best for this problem, also get a magnetic cleaner for the walls. Just know that multiple Nerite snails will lead to eggs, which only hatch in salt water.
  • Question
Can I use a Mr. Clean sponge?
    Community Answer
You should not use a sponge with any product on it, even if you rinse the tank after. The product would still leak into the water, which would kill your fish. I like to use plain paper towels, they get off all or most of the algae. If you have a lot of algae that is hard to get off, you could use a plain new sponge. But before you use the sponge you should rinse it with hot water.
