  • Question
Does this article apply to trucks too?
    Top Answerer
Yes (providing they have a manual gearbox).
  • Question
I thought the whole idea of a manual transmission was so you could downshift to slow the vehicle? It's illegal to have the car out of gear, so when you slow down, how do you do it without double shifting?
    Community Answer
It is only illegal to coast downhill in neutral. Having a vehicle in neutral for a short time between gears is required on a manual transmission.
  • Question
Is this maneuver hard on the clutch?
    Community Answer
No. CYour clutch is actually designed for much more abuse than double-clutching. However, be careful you don't grind gears by clutching out too quickly before you're back in gear.
  • Question
What's the point of double-clutch downshifting?
    Community Answer
There are a few advantages: you won't get a jerk when you downshift without rev-matching, you can stay in your power-band to maximize high torque when you accelerate, and you control your car's speed using engine braking and lessening front brake pad wear.
  • Question
How do I get out of neutral while floating gears in a 10 speed truck?
    Community Answer
You need to know your vehicle, and it will take some practice. You need to know things like, "What RPMs do I need in each gear to maintain this speed?" Let's say that to maintain a speed of 30, 3rd gear needs 2500 RPM and 4th gear needs 2000 RPM. If you're at 30, in neutral, and wish to accelerate, use the accelerator to hold the RPMs at 2000, hold the clutch in for a moment, shift into 4th, and release the clutch. If you're at 30, in neutral, and wish to decelerate, use the accelerator to hold the RPMs at 2500, hold the clutch in for a moment, shift into 3rd, and release the clutch. With practice you will learn the RPMs by sound or feel, and not have to look at the dashboard.
