If I add plywood under the cushions, will it tear the fabric underneath? Is there some way to prevent that?

I have used a combination of 1/4 inch plywood with masonite glued to it, ending up at about 3/4 of an inch and creating a very smooth surface so the cushions won't tear or get splinters. Masonite is available anywhere plywood is, it is a very smooth engineered hardwood.
