A leg extension is a great exercise for building leg size, as well as the leg curl. Another exercise is the deadlift. That one will build a lot of leg size. The other component would be the amount of repetitions that you do. The repetitions usually work best between 8 and 10 repetitions.

For young people the best way to strengthen the legs is running and jumping. Skipping is great exercise, especially for the calves. Single leg hops, standing long jump, running long jump, high jumping or just jumping back and forth over a curb, log or stick is great exercise for the legs. Jump puddles, or jump up the stairs one foot at a time.
  • Question
I am 66 years old and have been in a hospital bed for 40 days. Now my legs are weak and hurt when I try to walk. How can I make my legs stronger?
    Community Answer
Get up and walk, but be cautious. Make sure you stretch your muscles. Also, try doing different leg exercises, like leg raises. Go slow, and make sure you're consuming enough calcium to keep your bones strong. In your situation, though, the best thing to do would be talk to your doctor and have them prescribe a round of physical therapy. This way your recovery can be supervised by a professional.

One quick way to get faster is to check your form. If you open up your stride and move your arms down to your pockets and up to your ears, you will automatically be faster. Also, stronger arms, legs, and core, will make you faster. The most important part is determination; without it, you can't run faster at all.

If you are over 12, I'd say you could get into a weight room at a gym. You could also do squats and lunges with small hand weights to build leg strength. But, depending on your age, just running around outside and/or doing a sport will probably strengthen your legs plenty.

  • Question
I am a long distance runner, are there any recommended workouts to build up my leg strength?
    Raphael Key
    Top Answerer
Squats are a go to exercise for leg strength. They do, however, require practice to get right. Deadlifts are an equally challenging but less technically difficult alternative. As for whole workouts, I'd recommend stronglifts 5x5. It's a weightlifting program that gets you to squat every workout and it's designed for novices and intermediates, so you can keep going with it for a long time.

What's the right way to rise up from a chair if I have knee pain?
    Community Answer
Don't let your knees pass the height of your toes. If they are beyond your toes, all of your weight is landing on your knees, as a result they will hurt more and more. It is better if you talk to a doctor or a trainer about this.
  • Question
As an 89 year old, how can I strengthen my legs?

  • Question
Why do I have weak leg muscles when I'm on my feet hours of the day?
    Community Answer
You may use your legs, but you don't work your legs. Muscles develop to the point where they can get by just day to day. That's why you lose muscle when you don't work out. Your body doesn't need all of that. So to get stronger legs, you need to work your legs.
