  • Question
Can I do this with other plants or herbs?
    Community Answer
Yes! This method will work for most plants, given adequate sunlight and water, however, it must be an already sprouted plant, as seeds will grow upward no matter what.
  • Question
How do I take the tomato plant out of the pot?
    Community Answer
Hold the plant carefully near the base. With the other hand, gently tilt the pot to the side. Carefully pull the plant out by a combination of light pulling and a gentle up and down motion.
  • Question
My upside down tomato plant keeps growing upward. How can I make grow down toward the ground again?
    Community Answer
Plants naturally grow upward toward the sun and sky, so don't be surprised if your upside down tomatoes do the same. You can train your tomatoes to grow downward by gently insert a stake into the center of the plant. Tie some of the main branches of the plant to the stake to train it to grow in the direction you want.
  • Question
How come the plant just doesn't fall out of the bottle? Or wouldn't all of the dirt fall out like the sand in an hourglass?
    Robert M Wood
    Community Answer
You'll notice a small amount of dirt falling out the first day or two before it all has a chance to compact. Dirt is, effectively, very small rocks that fit tightly together much more effectively than the comparably large grains of sand. It holds securely and has a lot of weight to it. By the time your tomatoes start to grow, regular watering and gravity will have ensured that the dirt is compacted enough to hold securely to your plants.
  • Question
Every time I water my upside-down tomato plant, the excess water runs down the stem of my plant. How can I prevent this?
    Community Answer
I suspect you are over-watering your tomato plant. Try at least half as much water.
  • Question
How can I prevent the soil from compacting itself after watering my tomatoes?
    Robert M Wood
    Community Answer
Soil compacting cannot be avoided. The weight added by watering and gravity work together. However, this actually helps to hold the plant in place securely.
  • Question
Can they be grown outside using this method?
    Community Answer
Yes, they can be grown anywhere you'd usually grow right-side-up tomato plants. Regardless of where you place them, be aware that some water will drip down from the planter and onto the floor/ground below when planting upside-down.
