Wait until you think your puppy is about to bite you, then say a command like "no" or "no bite." If he doesn't bite you, reward him with praise and a treat. This will be more effective than telling him off after he's already bitten you.

The trick is to reintroduce him slowly to the grooming tools, in such as way that he associates them with good things. For example, leave a comb beside his food bowl and store his brush in the toy chest. Then show him the brush, and when he acts calm, praise and reward him. Gradually build up his tolerance of the brush being near him by rewarding good behavior. It might be wise to try a different type of grooming tool than previously (so maybe a Zoom Groom rather than a deshedding brush) and start on a part of his body that he's most tolerant of, and reward his co-operation.

Firstly, be extremely careful and never leave the child unsupervised near the dog. For many dogs a young child triggers feelings associated with chasing prey, so extreme caution is needed. Ideally, consult a trained behaviorist. In the meantime up the dog's basic training, and teach a solid "Sit" and a solid "Go to your mat" so you can control the dog and interrupt chasing behaviors.
  • Question
I recently adopted a 5 month old puppy and he has been quickly nipping at my 10 year old dogs face. Is this aggressive behavior and how can I stop this?
    Community Answer
If the adult dog doesn't growl or correct the puppy, then you should correct the puppy by saying "no" and taking him away. Do not correct the older dog for growling or snapping. He is teaching the puppy.
  • Question
What can cause my dog to bite me while being groomed?
    Community Answer
Your dog may have pain when being brushed, while grooming monitor whether this is occurring in one particular spot. If this seems to be the case, check the skin and the hair. Any matting being brushed will hurt. The dog may have had a bad experience at the salon or previous owner. If this may have happened then train them to enjoy grooming time with treats.
  • Question
How can I get my four-year-old Australian Kelpie to accept a new puppy?
    Community Answer
Take her and the puppy for walks together. As long as your Kelpie sees you as the leader of the pack, she will accept the puppy as a new member simply because you do.
  • Question
    Why does my puppy bite?
    Community Answer
Your puppy bites because he is most likely teething. All puppy teethe, just like babies. Get him a bone or a chew toy.
  • Question
I am about to have a baby, and my dog hates children. Should I have my dog's teeth pulled or put him down?
    Community Answer
Pulling their teeth is almost always a bad idea, unless you give extremely soft foods for the rest of his life. Consider putting him up for adoption instead of putting him down.
  • Question
How do I stop my two puppies from chasing and biting each other?
    Community Answer
To some extent that is natural dog behavior and if you try to interfere you might get hurt. If the dogs are hurting each other, try to keep them separated whenever possible. If the issues are prolonged, you may have to consider re-homing one of the dogs.
  • Question
How do I stop my dog from charging and wanting to nip at people?
    Community Answer
Never leave the dog unsupervised. Maybe have some friends or family come over and have him "sit" and "stay". If he doesn't listen, put him on a leash or in a crate. Consider buying a muzzle for the dog.
  • Question
How can I make my beagle stop nipping anything around him, like our wooden chair?
    Community Answer
There are some sprays you can put in things they commonly chew, like the chair. Once you spray what they chew, it will taste bad and prevent further chewing.
  • Question
Why do cats meow and dogs bark while I have a bowl or a plate?
    Community Answer
It depends. Sometimes they're hungry too and want to be fed, but other times they might just want whatever you have (or your attention!).
  • Question
Is it possible that my dog is biting because her teeth are still coming in?
    Community Answer
Yes, it is possible. Check to make sure, though. It's also possible that she just wants to play, or that she doesn't like something you are doing. If it's an issue, try leaving her alone or distracting her with a toy.
  • Question
What if they bite you and you are bleeding?
    Community Answer
If it's not bad and you know the dog isn't rabid, disinfect the wound and bandage it. If it's bad or you were bitten by a stray, go to the doctor.
  • Question
How do I know when a dog is truly aggressive or just young/training?

Aggressive bites are faster and usually accompanied by stiff body language.
  • Question
I have an 11 year-old rescue Chihuahua. We've had her for about a year and she is very aggressive. Is there anything we can do about this?
    Community Answer
Try to keep her calm, and when she charges or bites, give a reprimand. When the dog walks past strangers and does not bite, give positive affirmation.
  • Question
How do I stop my dog from biting people?

You may need to get him or her a muzzle to prevent them from biting. You may also try obedience training as this will help the dog recognize that you are the one who is in charge.
  • Question
When my dog is playing with a toy or bone and she bites, what should I do?
    Community Answer
We have a very possessive dog who originally bit us when we went near her toys, food, or bones while she was using them. To train her, we took her food bowl and everything else away and put them in a place that she could not reach them. When it was time for her to eat, we would feed her by hand. This teaches her that all food came from us, and she did not get to be in charge of it. With her toys/bones, we would hold it out of her reach, and make her sit before we gave it to her. This taught her patience and that she could trust us to give her what she deserved. At the end of each day, we put everything away, and repeated the drill the next day.
  • Question
What is good for a puppy that is teething?
    Community Answer
Rawhide bones, Bully sticks and rubber toys. As a puppy is teething you'll notice that it'll nearly bite anything, including you. It's best not to allow your puppy bite on your hands as this can spiral out of control. As soon as your teething puppy bites you, correct the behavior and give your puppy an acceptable chew toy.
  • Question
How do I stop my eight-week-old puppy from biting my feet and ankles?

  • Question
How do I stop my dog from nipping at other dogs if they're overprotective of me?
    Catherine Thompson
    Community Answer
Correct him by pulling him away from the dogs, and putting him in 'time-out' until he's calm. If your dog is nipping at others, you can get into trouble for it if you go to dog parks. Try to socialize him more, and be patient.
  • Question
How do I prevent a dog from biting someone again? Can the dog be trained or does it need to be put down?
    Catherine Thompson
    Community Answer
If your dog draws blood and/or injures the person badly, sadly it has to be euthanized. If it's minor, yes, he can be trained.
  • Question
How do I stop my sheepdog from biting me all the time?
    Community Answer
As mentioned earlier on this site, find out why he's biting you. Sheep dogs are protective dogs. Figure out if it's from aggression, fear, a learned behaviour, etc. Seek professional advice.
  • Question
What do I do if my dog will bite when it gets excited?
    Community Answer
This is usually a learned behaviour. At sayome time, probably when he was young, he was not corrected when play biting. So ,he believes it is ok to bite when he is excited (as in happy). I would use the same techniques described here for aggressive biting. The goal is to prevent it (command "no" when you see it coming, and reward if he doesn't bite). Repeat and repeat. While playing or during excitement reward randomly when he's not biting (positive reinforcement). If he does not comply abruptly stop the play or exciting situation and put him on time out for about 30-60 seconds. Create the same situation several times using same techniques to reinforce quickly.
  • Question
How do I stop my dog from biting itself when it has allergies?
    Community Answer
See your vet for medication and to find the source of the allergy. Try to avoid the allergy trigger. There are creams that don't taste good that you can put on the trigger area as well. Also use playful distraction but do not reward the biting directly. Say "no", then play or go for a walk.
