    Expert Answer
Well, I always recommend wrapping the painting in acid-free tissue paper, followed by bubble wrap and then a layer of foam—3/4” insulation foam from a hardware store works great. Place it in a box and ensure all open space is filled so that there is no room for movement. To finish, put an extra layer of cardboard around the corners, since this is where damage is most likely.
  • Question
    Can ordinary oil be used?
    Community Answer
Not if it is motor oil or something similar. Stick to what the experts recommend.
  • Question
How can I layer highlights over my dark based trees without the colors just mixing into a muddy green and instantly dirtying my brush? I'm doing the wet on wet technique like I've seen Bob Ross do.
    Community Answer
Use a lighter color and thinner paint and touch lightly with the brush. This is Bob Ross' own instruction.
  • Question
Is it necessary to paint a layer of white gesso onto pre-primed canvas before starting to paint, in order to make the canvas as smooth as possible?
    Community Answer
It depends. If the canvas is pre-primed, there is no requirement to add another layer of gesso. However, it's okay to do so if you wish to have a surface with less 'tooth.' The more 'tooth' there is, the rougher the surface of the canvas, so you might want to add one or more coats of gesso to smooth out its surface.
  • Question
    How do I paint mist?
    Community Answer
Use white paint in an area where you would like the appearance of mist. Use a blending or fluffy brush to ease that into the landscape. Paint trees or other shapes with white paint added on top.
  • Question
Do Boldmere ready oil colours have to be mixed with anything, or can I use them straight from the tube?
    Spookyneighbour
    Community Answer
Straight from the tube should be alright. Just make sure your canvas or board is prepped properly.
  • Question
How do I paint firmly on a canvas?
    Community Answer
Buy an easel, and sit down while painting. Also, learn to paint without letting your hand touch the canvas. Try to hold the brush vertically.
  • Question
If I use safe solivants like Gamblin do i still need a well venilated room? I live in Wisconsin and I can't open windows when it's below zero.
    Community Answer
Consider using a less-toxic solvent, such as Turpenoid or Gamsol, which are turpentine alternatives. If you can't open a window, wear a respirator or face mask and run a fan in the room.
  • Question
I don't have linseed oil, can I just use sunflower oil?
    Community Answer
Sunflower oil should work alright, just not as well as linseed oil. It may interfere with drying time, lightfastness, and other properties of the paint, so use with caution.
  • Question
Should I not start with underpainting?
    Community Answer
Underpainting allows you to plan out your painting and figure out where each item/component of the composition goes, so it is an important step to take.
