  • Question
I'm a tenor but my voice breaks a lot while I sing. What can I do to not make it break?
    Community Answer
Practice vocal exercises that go through the parts of your voice that break. This is typically going to happen when you're working with the less developed notes of your head voice and falsetto, but can also happen at your switch from the chest. When you're singing up and down through these notes, don't tense or attack them, relax and remove as much tension from your body and singing mechanisms as possible. You will slowly develop your vocal chords until you have control of your entire range. Don't be embarrassed by a crack, just accept that it's a natural step in your vocal development. Additionally, this is extremely common when your voice is changing in puberty.

  • Question
    Why can't I belt out C5? I can only belt until B4 - but I can whistle until E7.
    Community Answer
Most tenors do the high C in head voice or the mix voice. The tenors who can chest a high C are born able. Don't neglect your head voice or your mix; they're part of your vocal range.
  • Question

  • Question
How can I sing in pitch?

  • Question
When I used my falsetto, I immediately go back to my regular voice. What can I do?
    Community Answer
Using your falsetto voice takes a huge amount of breath control/support. Practice breathing techniques (such as breathing into your lower back instead of allowing your shoulders to move up while breathing etc.). Getting used to taking deep, full breaths, and letting them out in a controlled manner will make it considerably easier to sing in falsetto when paired with proper vocal warm-ups!

  • Question

  • Question
How can I become a countertenor?
    Laura Lobo
    Community Answer
The best way to improve your singing is by getting training from a professional voice coach. In the mix method of singing, you will learn to cross over from low notes to high notes without an obvious break, and your high notes will soar with ease and beautiful resonance. To start, use a low impact vocal exercise across a range of notes by gently setting your lips together in a forward kiss shape, then make the vocal sounds through burbling lips like a motor boat in the swimming pool. After you practice this effortlessly across both low and high notes, use a syllable like "oo" and duplicate the same relaxed air flow that you recall from the lip burble exercise.
  • Question
Is there anyway I can manipulate where my falsetto kicks? I want to belt much higher notes in my real voice.
    Community Answer
Your voice can change, depending on how much you practice using the right techniques. If you are serious about singing, invest in vocal lessons.
  • Question
I lose my breath while singing, and have to break the lines of lyrics. What should I do?
    Community Answer
Don't sing with a voice you are not comfortable with. Practice daily by singing scales to the higher note every time until you feel you can reach that note. Practice makes perfect.
  • Question
When singing tenor for a consistently high piece (like Handel's Zadok or Hallelujah), my throat tightens up halfway through and by the end I can’t get anything out. How do I keep power throughout?
    Community Answer
Make sure your chin is level and you're not tensing in your forehead. Tensing muscles in your face/neck can cause tightening. Make sure you are using lots of air.
  • Question
What should I do if I experience shortness of breath when singing a high note?
    Community Answer
All you can do is hold the note out as long as you can before taking a breath. Don't push too much on the note or it will come out sounding strained and possibly sharp.
  • Question
How can I sing tenor 2?
    Community Answer
Scales. Find exercises for your original range, and make sure you have mastered the range in which you are comfortable. Once you've done that, start adding scales a pitch higher to your daily practice. I met a teacher once who told her students to go "one past perfect". Find the highest or lowest pitch you can go while still having your perfect, best sound, and go one pitch or scale past it. Keep doing that until your "one past perfect" becomes another perfect sound.

  • Question
How do I manage my breath perfectly when singing?
    Community Answer
Focus on moving your stomach in an out. Allow your entire body to move with the highs and lows of the song. It is okay if it all shows just as is to onlookers. Start by warming your voice and taking a deep breath. While practicing, make notes of where you will be breathing a bit harder than others so you can prepare in advance.
  • Question
How can I sing high notes like Mitch Grassi from the Pentatonix? I have the same vocal range as him but I don't seem to hit notes as high as him. Every time I try, my voice breaks or croaks.
    Community Answer
This requires practice and strength. Practice bringing all your strength through your body. Don't put the effort through your throat alone. Professional singers put a lot of emphasis on physical training, which helps balance the stress on the vocal chords. Try to move your arms and make a fist as you hit high notes. Tuck your tummy in and breathe strongly moving your upper half of the body while doing so.
  • Question
How can I let my voice be harmonic?
    CageyCat
    Top Answerer
Every singer must listen to the other singers. Your job is not to be louder, but to singer quieter until you learn to harmonize. It is always a process of listening.
  • Question
I have a problem.... I sing in high pitches but I always use my falsetto a lot and my mentor says it isn't right... how true is it?
    CageyCat
    Top Answerer
Falsetto is like salt and pepper. A little of seasoning makes food taste good, but a lot just makes the food taste terrible. There aren't songs I'm aware of that need or use falsetto throughout. Think of your voice as seasoning. Talk to your mentor about where in a song that your particular seasoning will make the song special.
  • Question
I always lose my voice after sing. What do I need to do and what do I need to do bring my voice back?
    Community Answer
You're probably using improper techniques. Try to not strain your neck muscles, you don't need to yell notes and they don't take much air to push out. Breathe out of your diaphragm, the tension in your body should be your abdominal muscles and not your neck. Warm up your voice before singing, and don't sing if it hurts at all. Singing isn't like talking, you'll use more precision and less air. Get a vocal coach or a speech therapist if the problem persists, you can permanently damage your voice if you continue to damage it when singing.
  • Question
Is it possible for a bass singer to increase his vocal range into a tenor one?
    Ray
    Community Answer
It's very likely you could work hard and develop a strong falsetto/head voice, but a "true bass" will never be able to hit a C5 in a chesty mix voice like a true leggero tenor can. Ultimately, it depends on your natural vocal cord thickness.
