  • Question
Are there any special leg techniques that I should employ?

When you jump from the board with your takeoff leg, drive your opposite leg up into the air. Once your takeoff foot leaves the board, your opposite knee should drive as high into the air as possible. This will help you jump higher and farther.

    Community Answer
Just far enough to hit top speed, but not too far, otherwise you might end up slowing down. About 13 to 17 steps will work well.
  • Question
How can I prevent my feet from penetrating the line or the wooden plank that I am supposed to jump from?
    Community Answer
Some people have a tendency to stretch their legs farther when approaching the board. This will cause you to foul your jump (go over the line). The best thing to do is to keep your run normal, look into the distance and don't think too much; just jump.
  • Question
How do I jump without putting my hands back?
    Community Answer
When you are done taking off the board, you are supposed to bring your arms higher than your shoulders or your head when you are still in the air. If you have a decent jump, then you could fling your arms several times in the air like you do while swimming, and at the time of landing, try to bring the upper body ahead. You certainly won't fall with your hands back.

Practice several times running full speed right past the take-off board and through the pit. Concentrate each time on hitting the board without fouling. Don't worry about jumping. Just run hard. If you drift back to your old habit, start the process over again.
