Staying Safe When Looking for Weird Websites

PDF download Download Article
  1. 1
Do not open websites with expired HTTP tags. If a website fails to load fully and you get a message about there being no HTTP or HTTPS certificate, do not select the option to continue on to the webpage. These missing security tags indicate that the site is likely unsafe, as it has not been updated to protect against modern intrusions. [1]
    • A lot of these strange websites are jokes, personal projects, or weird art ideas. As a result, a lot of these niche websites are abandoned when it comes to security updates.
  2. 2
Hover over links to ensure they go to normal URLs. If you take your mouse cursor and hover over a button or link, the address will pop up. Confirm anything you’re going to click on is actually a normal URL. If you see odd strings of letters, “.exe” files, or websites that aren’t related to the one you’re on, skip it.
    • On mobile, tap and hold a link to get the full URL to pop up. Then, you can read it and determine if the link looks suspicious or not.
  3. 3
Do not enter your personal information anywhere. None of the websites we’ve linked to above require you to enter any information. You don’t need to sign up for anything or enter a credit card. If you’re browsing weird sites and you get asked to enter a bunch of personal information, do not do it. You could be getting scammed.
