To avoid extra fees, there are also a number of internet and mobile application options available to make calls for free!
How to Call the United States from India
Dial the exit code 00 , then dial the US country code 1 . Enter the area code and local number you are trying to call. For instance, to call the US number 503-555-1234, you’d dial 00-1-503-555-1234.
Steps
-
Dial 001 using your telephone’s keypad. “00” is the exit code for India, which must be dialed when making international phone calls. The “1” is the country code for the United States. [1] X Research source
- If you are calling from a mobile phone, you can substitute the “00” for the “+”, usually located on the 0-digit key. You can usually select it by pressing and holding until the “0” switches to a “+”.
- You will then continue to dial the country code and telephone number as usual. For example, +1 (555) 555-5555.
-
Dial the recipient’s 3-digit area code. All US telephone numbers are assigned a 3-digit area code based on the city and state. There are currently over 300 area codes in the US. The area code might be separated from the main phone number with parentheses (i.e. (555) 555-5555) or a hyphen (555-555-5555).

- If the phone number is a mobile number, the number's area code may not represent the geographic region the owner is actually located in. Contact the person via mail or email if you do not have this portion of the phone number.

Dial the recipient’s 7-digit phone number. The last 7 digits, along with the 3-digit area code, make up a unique phone number for every line in the US. [2] X Research source The number is usually split up into three digits, then four digits separated by a hyphen (i.e., 555-5555).
-
Press the call button. This button may say Send or will have an icon of a phone on it. This button is usually green and located at the bottom of your call screen.
-
Sign up for Skype to call the US from India. Skype is an internet voice-over-IP service created and owned by Microsoft. Signing up is free, but there is a charge to call a US phone number from your Skype. To use Skype, simply download it on your computer or mobile device, sign up and log in, then place your call.
- It costs ₹200 INR ($2.99 USD) per month to get unlimited minutes to call mobile phones and landlines in the US on Skype.
- Skype also offers video chat services. If both you and the recipient have Skype accounts, you can video call for free using Skype's services.
-
Use free mobile calling applications. Many mobile applications today offer same-app to same-app calling for free. For example, Snapchat, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Apple’s FaceTime allow users to make free data calls through their services.
- These calling services tend to use data instead of minutes. It is best to be on a Wi-Fi network or have a large allotment of cellular data to avoid overages if calling in this way.
-
