Abyss Mages are enemies that are part of the command of the Abyss Order. Depending on their element, Abyss Mages can launch Pyro, Cryo, Hydro, or Electro attacks. Defeating an Abyss Mage should be simple, provided that you counter with the correct element.

Knowing the Characters Needed

  1. The character you will need depends on the element the Abyss Mage aligns with. You can use elemental sight (by pressing on the elemental sight button or holding down the middle mouse button) to determine the name of the enemy.
    • Pyro Abyss Mages are best countered with Cryo, Electro, or Hydro. Hydro is especially useful due to how the Vaporize reaction works.
    • Cryo Abyss Mages are best countered with Pyro, Electro, or Hydro. Pyro is especially useful due to how the Melt reaction works.
    • Hydro Abyss Mages are best countered with Pyro, Cryo, or Electro. Cryo is especially useful due to how the Frozen reaction works.
    • Electro Abyss Mages are best countered with Pyro, Hydro, or Cryo. Pyro is especially useful due to how the Overloaded reaction works.
    • If there are more than one Abyss Mage with different element types, then you can use Anemo to diffuse their elements together.

Avoiding Damage

  1. With these attacks, the Abyss Mage will cast its element directly on you, dealing damage. Move back and away to avoid this attack, or use a shield.
  2. In this attack, the Pyro Abyss Mage launches three demonic dragon-like heads that breathe fire. Move away from the focal point of the dragon heads to avoid taking damage.
  3. In this attack, the Cryo Abyss Mage summons icicles above you dealing damage in an area of effect. Dash to dodge the icicles before they land on the red area.
  4. In this attack, the Hydro Abyss Mage throws a homing Hydro bubble at you. Run away from the bubble, but do try to catch other enemies in this bubble to make attacking them easier.

Avoid the Electro Abyss Mage's Electro ring. In this, the Abyss Mage will create an electric field that deals Electro DMG upon contact. Stay away from the Abyss Mage while it is doing this.
  6. In this, the Abyss Mage will attempt to reform its shield. This will launch a specific element into the air around the Abyss Mage in the form of icicles, flareups, orbs, or bubbles. Coming in contact with these will deal elemental damage. After some time, the shield will reform, knocking back the player and dealing elemental damage.

  1. Orange means Pyro, light blue means Cryo, purple means Electro, and dark blue means Hydro.
  2. This will wear down the shield of the Abyss Mage so you can knock it down more easily.

Tip : If there is more than one enemy of different elements, you can use Anemo to inflict their elements on each other. So if you are fighting a Cryo and a Hydro Abyss Mage, using Anemo will cause the latter to freeze.

  3. You can use the Swirl or Overloaded reactions, a plunging attack, or a charged attack by a sword, claymore, or polearm wielder to knock back the Abyss Mage so it cannot regenerate its shield. If the shield regenerates, then break the shield again.
  4. If done correctly, the Abyss Mage will effectively be defeated, dropping a Ley Line branch. You may also get a chest unlocked that can drop valuable materials and/or result in you leveling up.
