Basic and effective fighting strategy with a stick or stick-like weapon. Kali sticks, umbrellas, canes, crowbars.

  1. A cut-down broom handle will work. The stick should be approximately the distance between your armpit and your wrist. [1]
  2. Or cut an X in the air repeatedly for the same effect. Move from the elbow and shoulder instead of the wrist.

  3. Keep in mind this is your defense, as it is better for your lesser hand to be hit than the hand you're holding the stick in. [2]
  4. Over your left shoulder, over your right shoulder, from your left hip. Find the blows that you can deliver powerfully from each of these starting locations. [3]
  5. Make sure to always have a view of the whole situation around you if you are fighting more than one opponent. [4]
  6. crown of head, sides of head and neck, collarbones, arms, wrists, knuckles, elbows, hip bones, knees.
  7. You can appear to deliver a forehand strike to his left collarbone and really swing down and shatter his kneecap.
  8. This could be as simple as two figure-eights. Practice delivering one blow, then perform the finishing set. Do this over and over and over with multiple starting blows.
  9. Angle out at a 45 degree angle with your left foot, deliver a blow and perform your finishing set. Do it again on the right side. Do the same thing stepping back at an angle with your left and right feet, and to the side with left and right feet. [5]

  • Question
Who the heck fights with sticks?
    Community Answer
It could help if you are attacked by someone attempting to injure you or abduct you and you have no other weapons. This could also apply to other stick-like weapons.
  • Question
Does this apply to a knife or small sword as well?
    Community Answer
If it's the right length then yes, it does apply. If it's too short, like a knife, then it won't help.
  • Question
Where can I go for training?
    Community Answer
Find a local martial arts center. Usually, Dojo's that train karate teach this kind of thing.

      Tips

      • These same principles can all be applied to the knife.
      • Hit objects such as posts, trees, hanging tires. A post in your basement with carpet wrapped around it is a great target. So is a tennis ball hanging from a rope.
      • Learn how to carry a secondary weapon such as a knife in your left hand. Practice doing a figure-eight with the stick-- forehand, backhand-- and then a forward stab with the knife.
