Do People Really Have Types?

You’ve probably noticed that your friends tend to be attracted to the same types of partners over and over again. Does this mean that most people really do have a “type”? There actually is some scientific evidence in support of this theory. One study found that 50% of people have a unique preference for faces, and that who we find attractive is most strongly influenced by our life experiences. [1] Another study found that people tend to consistent patterns when it comes to their partners’ personalities, and that they’re repeatedly drawn into relationships with a particular type of person. [2] Not sure what your type is? We’ll go over some tips to help you figure this out below!

How to figure out your type:

  • Think about your past partners or crushes. Can you identify any similarities between them? Did they like he same things or enjoy the same hobbies? Did they have the same favorite subject in school, or work in the same field? Did they have similar character traits? Finding these commonalities can help you figure out if you’ve got a pattern when it comes to the people you like!
  • Make a list of ideal traits. Take a minute and try to picture your ideal partner, then write out all the characteristics and values they’d have. For example, your list could include things like: ambitious, reliable, hardworking, intelligent, artistic, caring, practical, outdoorsy, active, sporty, chill, calm, kind, thoughtful, etc. When you're done, look at your list and see if you can pick out any common themes.
  • Take your own interests into account. Although opposites do attract sometimes, there’s also some research that suggests people are most drawn to partners who are similar to them. [3] So, if you’re an artsy and creative person, an ambitious and hardworking person, or a chill and laid-back person, there’s a good chance you’re attracted to this type of partner, too.
