  • Question
How do I maintain the color of the acorns when drying them?
    Beth H.
    Community Answer
You can use clear acrylic to preserve and protect them.
  • Question
Do I have to clean acorn caps too before using them for crafts?
    Community Answer
Yes, if you want them preserved for a longer time period; otherwise, your caps will age and your nuts will not.
  • Question
How long would these dried acorns last?
    Community Answer
Once they are dry, they should last as long as needed, as long as they aren't re-wetted. To further prevent the chance of mold growth (from moist environments), seal the nuts with a craft or wood varnish of your choice.
  • Question
How do I take the top of the acorn off?
    Community Answer
You could use a butter knife or just take it off with your hands.
  • Question
How can I save the extra acorns to feed the squirrels without them digging them up?
    Community Answer
I personally have had no problem just keeping the acorns without drying them. Just be sure there is no excessive moisture in the area your are storing them in (a sandwich bag or plastic container will do). Then, just place them outside in the wintertime near a tree or a bird feeder so they can enjoy their own little snack.
  • Question
What are the benefits to drying an acorn like this (drying and baking) vs. leaving them as I found them?
    Community Answer
Bugs! I once collected a bunch of acorns to fill a clear glass bowl-like container for a beautiful rustic display fir a table at the end of the hall. A few weeks later I found larvae (dead, thankfully) all over the place around the table.
