My 17-year-old poodle has become very head shy. The groomer won't do him anymore. How do I get his head clipped?

I had this issue with my elderly poodle. We ended up waiting until she was asleep or very tired and carefully clipped her face with scissors while someone held her. Didn't need to be pretty, just enough for her to be comfortable.

  • Question
Should his eyelashes be clipped/cut? The groomer asked me and I said no thinking they would help to protect his eyes but the lashes are long and I think they bother him.
    Community Answer
Just like a poodle's hair, a poodle's eyelashes will continue to grow indefinitely and may curve inward toward the eyes on some dogs, causing irritation. Depending on the dog and the owner's preference, eyelashes can be clipped clean right along with the face, trimmed periodically to a reasonable length, or even grown out and added to the topknot (barring any issues with inward-curling eyelashes). If your dog seems to be bothered by them, take a look at the direction they curl and whether they can be incorporated into his topknot, but it may simply be time for a trim.
  • Question
How do I trim the inside of my poodle's ears if it gets angry?
    Community Answer
Poodles' ear hairs should be pulled, not trimmed. Try pulling just a few hairs at once, and use the special tweezers made for this purpose, so you don't have to grab with your fingers and grab too many hairs. Your vet should be able to show you how to do this or watch videos that show you what to do.
  • Question
I like the puppy cut, and I also like the beard and mustache on my poodle. Which blade should I use for this style? Would a Wahl blade work?
    Community Answer
Talk to your groomer but you could use a 12 blade. It also depends on what cut you like. You can also use a 9 blade.
  • Question
Can I shave along my maltipoo's mustache and beard? Or I should leave it behind?
    Community Answer
If you can do it without hurting your dog, then do it but carefully. Make sure to be very careful and use grooming scissors because it will be easier to get in a smaller place like the mustache.
