My computer is prompting me to check the video cable. Where and what is that?

The video cable is the cable that sends video (and sometimes audio) information to the monitor. Depending on what kind of cable you used, it could look different. Look for something blue, white or black. In step four of this article, the blue connector is a 'male' VGA connector, which is a video cable.

I powered up my desktop computer and didn't get anything out of the monitor. The PC sat unused for a couple of years. Any advice?

Does the computer have a light on? If it does, make sure the monitor is on. If your computer has a dedicated graphics card, try using the Integrated graphics. Note: If you find your dedicated GPU is broken, replace it as soon as possible.
