Focus on the fundamentals. Get into the range as much as you can. Always treat every visit to the range as an opportunity to learn. You can also do what's called dry fire practice at home with an unloaded gun in a separate area of the home.

If you don't, start off with .22 long rifle (preferably a bolt); ammo is cheap and available anywhere firearms are sold; it doesn't kick, either, so if you have children, it won't be an issue. However, do not scrimp on any safety protocol; a .22 still has enough energy to shatter bones.
