    Expert Answer
Color-safe shampoos are usually sulfate free and also have a pH to keep your cuticles closed. Sulfates are widely used to create the lather in shampoos, however, they can be harsh. As for the pH, hair has a pH of 4.5-5.5. Anything higher will swell the cuticles which can make color fade.

Wash bleached hair with cold water so your cuticles stay closed. Keep the water as cold as you can stand it.

Choose a shampoo and conditioner that are labeled as "sulfate-free." These products will not strip the essential oils from your hair as much as other products.
  • Question
Can I rinse my bleached hair within that 48-72 hour time frame? Will rinsing with just cold water affect my hair color?

Yes, you can rinse it with cool water! Water alone (especially cold), will not strip your hair of any color. The bleaching process lifts your hair follicle and the color is deposited inside the hair shaft (unlike temporary color which lays on top of the hair). Water cannot remove the permanent color from your hair.
