Quickly email multiple recipients at once in Gmail
This wikiHow teaches you how to send an email to a group in Gmail. The best way to do this is to create a Gmail contact group (label) on your computer , phone, or tablet and add recipients to the group. Once you create your group, you can type the group's name into the BCC field of a new Gmail message to automatically address the email to everyone in the group. Alternatively, you can manually type the email addresses or contact names into the BCC field. Read on to learn how!
Create a Group Email in Gmail: Quick Steps
- Go to contacts.google.com in a web browser.
- Click + next to "Labels".
- Name your group and click Save .
- Select contacts to add to the group.
- Click the label icon at the top.
- Select the group name and click Apply .
- Type the group's name into the "BCC" field in Gmail to email the group.

Creating a Gmail Group (Computer)
-
Go to Google Contacts in a web browser. If you're not already signed into your Gmail account, sign in now. [1] X Research source
- Use this method if you plan on sending messages to the same group frequently. This method allows you to create and add contacts to a contact group (called a Label). Once you add contacts to the label, you can type the label into the BCC field of the message instead of a long list of recipients.
-
2Click + next to "Labels" in the left panel. "Labels" is toward the bottom of the left sidebar. This will open the "Create label" window.Advertisement
-
Type a name for the label and click Save . This should be a brief but descriptive title for the group. Once saved, you'll see the name under the "Labels" header in the left column.
- Group names are case-sensitive, so remember which letters are capital and lowercase.
- The name you enter here will be the name of your group. Whenever you want to send a group email in Gmail, you'll type this group name.
-
Check the box next to each contact you want to add. Now that you've created a group label, you'll need to choose which contacts to add to the group. The check box appears when you hover the mouse over the contact's profile photo.
- If a contact doesn't have a profile photo, hover the mouse over the circle that contains their first initial.
-
Click the Manage Labels icon. It's the blue outline of a label or tag above the Contacts list. This displays a list of all labels.
-
6Select the label you created and click Apply . This adds all selected contacts to the label.
- To view your email group, just click the label on the left panel.
- You can add additional contacts to the label at any time by selecting them from your contacts list, clicking the label icon, and selecting the group name.
-
Send your group email in Gmail. Now that you've created a group label, you can send an email to the entire group in Gmail. Just compose a new message in Gmail, click BCC , type the group's name into the BCC field, and press Enter or Return to populate the group's email addresses.

Creating a Gmail Group (Mobile)
-
Open Google Contacts on your Android, iPhone, or iPad. If you're using an Android, the app you're looking for is labeled Contacts and has a round blue icon with a white outline of a person inside. If you're using an iPhone or iPad, you will need to open a web browser and go to contacts.google.com instead.
- Some Androids come with a different Contacts app—if you see a different icon, download Contacts by Google LLC from the Play Store now.
- Use this method if you plan on sending messages to the same group frequently, such as a newsletter . This method allows you to create and add contacts to a contact group (called a Label). Once you add contacts to the label, you can type the label into the BCC field of the message instead of a long list of recipients.
- While you can create a group email label on your iPhone or iPad, the Gmail app for iOS does not allow you to send an email to the group label. You will need to use your computer when it's time to email the group.
-
Tap the ≡ menu. It's at the top-left corner of the screen.
-
3Tap + next to "Labels". You will see this near the bottom of the left panel.
-
Type a name for your group. Keep this name brief, but be sure it describes this particular group of people. Also, because group label names are case-sensitive, remember how you used capital and lowercase letters in the group name.
-
Tap OK (Android) or Save (iPhone/iPad). Now that you've created the label, you can start adding group members to your email list.
-
Select people to add to the email group. The steps are a little different depending on whether you're using an Android, iPhone, or iPad:
- Android
- If you were returned to the Contacts list, tap the three-line menu ☰ and select the group you created.
- Tap Add contact + . [2] X Research source
- Tap and hold the first person you want to add to the group. Checkboxes will appear next to each contact.
- Check the boxes of everyone you want to add to the group.
- Tap Add .
- iPhone/iPad
- If you were not returned to the Contacts list, tap the three-line menu ☰ and select Contacts .
- Tap the first person you want to add to the group. A checkbox will appear.
- Tap the checkbox next to their name.
- Repeat for other contacts you want to add to your group email list.
- Tap the tag icon at the top of your contacts.
- Tap the name of the group you just created.
- Tap Apply to save your changes.
- Android
-
Send a message to the group. Now that you've created a label, see this method to learn how to send email to the group in Gmail.

Sending a Group Email in Gmail
-
Open Gmail. If you're using a computer, go to [3] X Research source in a web browser. If you're on a phone or tablet, open the Gmail app by tapping the colorful envelope icon on the home screen or in your app list.
- You can use this message to send a group email using a group you created in Google Contacts or by manually entering email addresses.
- If you're using an iPhone or iPad, you cannot use the Gmail app to send an email to a group you've created. You will need to use a computer.
-
Click or tap the Compose button. It's near the top-left side on a computer, and in the bottom-right corner of the mobile app. This creates a new message.
-
Open the BCC field. The best way to send a group email is to enter the group name or list of email addresses in the BCC field, as this hides the email addresses from the group recipients. On a computer, click BCC in the upper-right corner. In the Gmail mobile app, tap the down arrow to the right of the "To" field, then tap the BCC field.
- BCC stands for Blind Carbon Copy. Adding addresses or labels to this field instead of To or CC ensures that recipients can't see the recipient list.
- BCC also ensures that if a recipient replies to the message, it will only be delivered to the sender (not the group).
- If you'd prefer to make it so recipients see everyone's addresses on the list, skip this step and just enter the addresses or group name into the "To" field.
-
Enter the recipients or group name. If you created a group label, type the group's name into the BCC field, then press Enter or Return . Otherwise, type the email addresses of everyone in your group into the field. If you type an email address that Gmail recognizes, it will suggest a contact. Click or tap the contact to add their address to the field. Separate all other (non-contact) addresses with a comma.
- If the message is mainly directed to one person but you want other people to receive a copy, type the main recipient's email address into the "To" field, then type the other addresses into the "CC" field (if you want the other addresses to be visible) or the "BCC" field (if you want to hide the other addresses).
-
Type the email subject and message into the provided blanks. Now you can compose the rest of your group email like any other email.
-
Click the Send button. It's at the bottom-left corner of the message on a computer, and near the top-right corner in the mobile app (the paper airplane icon). This sends the message to everyone on the BCC list.
