Keep your MyPillow fresh and clean with our laundry instructions
PDF download Download Article

When your MyPillow is starting to get dirty, it’s time to freshen it up again with a good cleaning. Washing your MyPillow is as simple as tossing it into your washer with other laundry, running either a warm or cold cycle with mild detergent, and tumble-drying it on high heat. Even though cleaning a MyPillow is pretty easy, there are a few other tricks for loading the machine and drying out the foam quickly. Keep reading, and we’ll walk you through how to wash and take care of your MyPillow so it stays clean and comfortable for a good night’s sleep.

Things You Should Know

  • Add your MyPillow to a regular load of laundry in a side-loading washer. For a top-loader, put 2 pillows on opposite sides of the drum or wash 1 pillow with a towel load.
  • Use half the recommended amount of detergent, or about 3 4 fluid ounce (22 mL). Run a standard wash cycle using warm or cold water.
  • Put your MyPillow in the dryer on a high-heat setting and run normal cycles until the pillow dries completely. Launder your MyPillow every 4 months.

Washing a MyPillow in the Washer

  1. Use any type of detergent to wash your MyPillow, but know the brand recommends using half of the regular amount to reduce sudsing. [1] Because the standard amount of detergent to use during a load is around 1 1 2 fluid ounces (44 mL), cut it in half and pour it into your washing machine. [2]
    • MyPillow recommends that you don’t use any fabric softeners during your wash cycle.
    • If you’re using a laundry detergent bottle’s cap as a measuring cup, fill it halfway up to the “1 load” line and pour it into the machine.
  2. Wait until you have a medium-sized load of white or light-colored clothes to wash along with your pillow. Toss your pillow into the machine along with the clothes to help balance the load. [3]
    • A front-loading machine is preferred since it’ll prevent your pillow from floating on top of the water.
    • If you don’t have any clothes to wash, put your MyPillow in with a load of towels.

  3. Place each MyPillow on opposite sides of the machine. If you don’t have a second one to wash, set your MyPillow on one side of the machine’s drum and drop 2 or 3 large towels onto the other side so the machine stays balanced during the wash cycle. [4]
    • If your washer doesn’t have an agitator in the center, place the MyPillow in the washer first and then weigh it down with a few heavy towels so it doesn’t float to the surface.
  4. While some pillows are designed to be washed on the “delicate” or “gentle” setting, MyPillows are safe for any “regular,” “normal,” or “cotton” setting. [5]
    • A “delicate” or “gentle” cycle uses slow spin cycles and limited agitation, which won’t clean your MyPillow as effectively as the faster regular cycle.
  5. Depending on the type of machine you’re using, try either a “warm/warm,” “warm/cold,” or “cold/cold” setting. [6] Choose a “cold” setting if you prefer a more energy-efficient approach, or select a “warm” setting if you’d like to sanitize your pillow more thoroughly or eliminate stains.
    • Avoid using a hot water cycle for cleaning your MyPillow because it could damage the foam inside
  6. If your MyPillow still feels excessively damp or wet at the end of the wash, add 1 or 2 more spin cycles to help remove as much water as possible. Depending on the type of machine you’re using, you can add an extra spin to the initial wash cycle, or run a separate spin cycle after the initial wash is done. [7]
    • Drawing more moisture out of the MyPillow’s foam with spin cycles makes your drying times shorter.

Drying Your MyPillow

  1. As opposed to low heat, high heat will more quickly and completely dry your MyPillow inside and out. Select the highest heat setting on your dryer and the standard length cycle. [8]
  2. While dryer balls may fluff other types of pillows, they’re not recommended to use for a MyPillow. Simply place your MyPillow, along with any other pillows, towels, or clothing items from the previous load, into your dryer. [9]
    • Avoid putting in any fabric softener or dryer sheets to the load because manufacturers recommend against it.
  3. After the drying cycle finishes, pull out your pillow and squeeze it to check for damp patches. Even if there are just a few small spots that contain some moisture, toss the pillow back into the dryer for 10 to 15 more minutes. Keep checking and drying the pillow until it’s free of moisture. [10]
    • Your MyPillow won’t melt or get damaged in your dryer, so don’t worry about over-drying.

Maintaining Your MyPillow

  1. When you first get a MyPillow, place it directly in your dryer. Run the machine on a high heat setting for about 10–15 minutes to break apart the compacted foam inside so your pillow is more comfortable.
  2. Use a pillowcase and cover to keep your MyPillow clean. Stuff your MyPillow into a cover to help keep dust mites and allergens out of it. Then, slide on a well-fitting pillowcase to prevent sweat, oils, and cosmetic products from transferring from your face to the pillow while you’re sleeping. [11] The manufacturers recommend using a 100% cotton pillowcase with your MyPillow. [12]
    • Launder your pillowcase at least once a week, and wash the pillow cover once a month.
  3. Fluff your MyPillow by hand every night before going to bed. While the MyPillow’s foam fill automatically adjusts to support your neck and spine, fluffing it helps the foam spread out evenly. Grab the ends or corners of your pillow and rapidly push your fists toward each other to pump some air into the foam. When you lie down, bunch the foam under the curve of your neck. [13]
  4. If you sleep on your MyPillow every night, keep it fresh by washing it about 3 times a year. If you have allergies, wash it every 2 months instead. [14]
    • The 10-year MyPillow warranty covers laundering, so don’t worry about your pillow going flat with regular washing and drying. [15]

  • Question
How long do you put a MyPillow in dryer?
    Drew Hawkins1
    Community Answer
Place your MyPillow inside your dryer and set it to a high heat setting, which will make sure it's dry inside and out and won't develop mildew. Set your dryer to a standard or normal setting, which is usually between 40-60 minutes. Once the cycle is done, take your pillow out and feel for any damp spots. If there are any, even if they're small, toss your pillow back in the dryer for another 10-15 minutes. Make sure the pillow is completely dry before you take it out.
  • Question
How often should I wash a MyPillow?
    Drew Hawkins1
    Community Answer
It's a good idea to wash your pillowcase every few weeks so you're lying on a clean surface. But over time, your pillow itself can collect dust, moisture, and potentially develop mildew. Luckily, washing your pillow in your washing machine every 3-4 months can keep it nice and clean and prevent mold or mildew from having a chance to develop. Make it a habit to wash your MyPillow at least every 4 months to help it last longer. If you get sick and end up having to spend a lot of time in bed, you may want to wash your pillow after you feel better to get rid of any bacteria that may be on your pillow.
  • Question
Can I put MyPillow in the washing machine?
    Drew Hawkins1
    Community Answer
Yes, absolutely. Place your MyPillow in your washing machine and add in a mild liquid detergent. Don't use powder detergent, because it can leave a residue on the pillow. Try to have a balanced load of laundry by adding some clothes and sheets so the pillow so the agitator is able to effectively clean the pillow. Run the pillow through your machine on a regular, standard setting using cold to warm water, but add an extra spin cycle to help remove the excess moisture from the pillow. When the cycle is finished, add your pillow to your dryer and dry it on a high-heat setting until it's completely dry.
