What Are the Hogwarts Houses?
In the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, there are 4 houses: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. Each new student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is sorted into a house by the Sorting Hat based on their personality traits and ambitions. But what are the “good” and “bad” qualities of each house? Here’s a quick guide:
- Gryffindor is the house of bravery. These witches and wizards have a courageous and determined spirit that puts them on the frontlines of any battle. Even so, their tendency to act before they think is their fatal flaw and can put themselves or loved ones in harm's way. The most famous Gryffindors are Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley.
- Slytherin is the house of ambition. These witches and wizards radiate confidence and are always one step ahead of everyone else. However, their ambitious and prideful nature can make them seem boastful and arrogant. Notable Slytherins include Draco Malfoy, Severus Snape, and Lord Voldemort.
- Ravenclaw is the house of intellect. These witches and wizards are the wisest in all of Hogwarts. Knowledge is their superpower, but it can also be their weakness. They hold themselves to high standards and often over-analyze situations. Notable members of Ravenclaw include Luna Lovegood, Gilderoy Lockhart, and Filius Flitwick.
- Hufflepuff
is the house of loyalty. These witches and wizards have strong moral compasses and are the most trustworthy. However, others may take advantage of their sweet and kind nature. Newt Scamander, Cedric Diggory, and Nymphadora Tonks are all Hufflepuffs.
Now, it’s important to note that no house is better or worse than another. Everyone has their opinions, but all houses can have “good” and “bad” witches and wizards in them. Your house doesn’t determine your fate; you do.
