If you can check the setting on the iPod screen, it will tell you its serial number under information. Or, get someone else to read it for you or use a magnifying glass.

Can I tell my iPod Shuffle's generation by the serial number?
    Community Answer
No, the easiest way to tell is by the model number (right below the serial number).
  • Question
What do I do if my iPod won't connect to my vehicle? What cable do I need?
    Community Answer
If you are using an iPod classic or iPod touch 4th generation or older, a 30-pin cable (the wider charger design used by Apple on all new products until 2012) with both a USB and AUX on the end will get you the highest quality, as it was specifically designed for iPods. If your car is not recent enough to have an iPod port (which became mainstream in the mid-2000s) an AUX cable would work just fine, or purchase an FM transmitter if your car doesn't have an AUX jack. If you happen to have both a newer car with a USB port and an iPod with the Lighting cable, (the current, charger, which is slimmer) you can just plug the Lightning cable right into the car.

While you certainly can (just do the same procedure as opening an iPhone), have Apple or a certified technician to fix it as it may be a risk to do this as a DIY project.
