  • Question
Can I do this in a safe way?
    Community Answer
It is safe, unless you have unsaved work or, in rare circumstances, your startup files were corrupted in the process. You can also do it in a virtual machine if you want to not damage your own computer.
  • Question
What happens if I end csrss.exe and can't boot again?
    Community Answer
It sounds like the OS was doing a major file transfer, and the files got corrupted. The only thing you can do is reinstall the operating system.
  • Question
How do I do it without being an admin?
    Community Answer
You can't, it is only an admin thing.
  • Question
Will this cause any type of after effect?
    Community Answer
Technically, this could corrupt files. Crashes are never good. Back up your data frequently or setting up a virtual machine is a good measure if you're experimenting with crashes.
  • Question
It doesn't work because I have Windows 8 and f12 is the screen brightness. How do I cause a blue screen of death?
    Community Answer
You just have to press whatever button is scroll lock. For example on my laptop scroll lock is fn + insert. It will say scroll lock under the key in a different color. If you can't trigger it while holding the fn key, you might have to switch what the fn keys do in bios.
  • Question
When I restarted my computer after the BSoD, the blue screen shows up again. What have I done wrong?
    Community Answer
It sounds as though your OS has become corrupt; this is nothing you've necessarily done wrong, it just happens sometimes on computers. Reinstall Windows from the factory disc.
  • Question
Is there a way to get the blue screen of death without harming Windows 7?
    Community Answer
If you use one of the methods above, it shouldn't cause any damage to the operating system. As long as you make sure there are no installation or file transfers or anything before you do it, it should be fine.

    Community Answer
Reinstall the OS, and do not try to make blue screen on your own computer. Use virtual machine.
  • Question
What do I do if the task manager says "Access Denied" when I try to force the BSoD?
    Community Answer
Try launching Task Manager with Admin. If that doesn't work, then open command prompt (you probably need to launch it with Admin) and type in taskkill /f /im "csrss.exe"
  • Question
I don't have scroll lock and/or it is with F12. What should I do?
    Community Answer
If it is with F12, you need to press Ctrl + Fn + Scroll Lock. If you do not have a Scroll Lock button, you should use the other method.
  • Question
I have a laptop (Where there is no connected USB or PS/2 keyboard, but rather an attached keyboard) Which registry do I edit? USB or PS/2?
    Sasa Bozilovic
    Community Answer
Laptops have a PS/2 keyboard. Open regedit, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\i8042prt\Parameters, add a DWORD value called CrashOnCtrlScroll with value 1, reboot and press right ctrl and twice scroll lock. If you don't have a scroll lock button, press fn+insert on lenovo after Ctrl.
  • Question
Is this save enough if I do the csrss.exe?
    sweety makhija
    Community Answer
It will work on Windows 7, but Windows 10 has protection features built in that prevent csrss.exe from being killed. You can still kill svchost.exe to cause the blue screen.
  • Question
I tried this on my vintage computer [OS is Windows 2000], it does not want to do it.

    Community Answer
You need to use newer Windows versions like Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10. You cannot force a BSOD in an old Windows version.
  • Question

Press a keyboard shortcut for the scroll lock key. For example Fn + C. Contact your manufacturer for the scroll lock keyboard shortcut.

You can, although it may not work in Windows 8 and up. Download "Not My Fault" from Google, open, select "Colors...", Select your text color and background color, select the error, and click "Crash". Now you're done!
