  • Question
What can I do if my neighbors have installed beehives about 500 feet from my back yard and the bees keep coming into my yard? I am allergic to bees and can't enjoy being outside at all.
    Community Answer
Bees will travel about 3 to 3 1/2 miles to forage. They can go over 5 miles if food is in short supply. Since wild bees live high up in trees most people are completely unaware of how many bee colonies are nearby. It's also possible there are other hobby beekeepers within 3 miles of you. The bee population in your yard will not decrease by getting rid of a few hives next door. It's all bout the plants that you grow that attract bees. Get rid of clover, golden rod, lavender, wild mint, thistle and all other bee-friendly plants and you will have a lot fewer bees in your yard.
  • Question
What can I do if bees are attracted to my washing on the clothesline and I can't find their hive?
    Community Answer
It is likely the scent and possibly the patterns of the clothes that are attracting the bees. Scent alone can attract bees so the best option may be to change the scent of your washing detergent to something less flowery or less sweet. Many bees cast a wide net from the hive before they return so there is less chance that you will find the exact hive. There is also the option of purchasing retracting clothes lines that you can hang your clothes on inside with the window open a small amount to allow the air to flow and allow sufficient light outside to generate heat to dry them.
  • Question
How do I get rid of bees in the ground?
    Community Answer
Bees don't live in the ground. Yellow Jackets and some other types of wasps live in the ground. If they pose a risk to family or pets, the best thing to do is mark the location and return at dusk with a can of wasp killer. Wasps don't fly at night so they will all be in the hive and you can kill them all at once.

  • Question
I need to get rid of bees that are constantly utilizing my hummingbird feeders. I have tried can sprays but this does not deter them. How do I get rid of them?
    Community Answer
There are bee protectors built into or that can be added to some hummingbird feeders. Also, make sure your feeder isn't leaking and that any feed solution that is spilled or slops onto the outside is cleaned off well. The bees are attracted to sugar. If you see a bee or two coming around, you may want to take the feeder inside for a day or two, so they lose interest in coming to your location. They leave soon after investigating the good feeder where they can't get to the food.
  • Question
Can bumblebees be removed from a cavity without damaging the wall?
    Community Answer
Nests in cavity walls are extremely difficult to locate, so it is best to allow them to finish their life cycle, which will only last for a couple of months. In the autumn after you stop noticing bees coming and going from the entrance, close up any holes which they were using and they won't return.
