This depends on the type of layer. Layers remove bulk from your length but they can also add volume.

For thinning hair, you want a mild shampoo that stimulates the scalp. Tea tree oil and mint are good ingredients to look for.

Thinning scissors work by trapping intermittent sections of the hair in their teeth so that only a portion of the hair in each section is cut. This removes bulk from the hair without changing the length.

I recommend asking your stylist to use shears to thin out your layers. You might also consider getting an undercut to thin out your hair.
  • Question
My hair is really thick and hard, and I don't like it. (I'm male.) What can I do to get beautiful, soft and thin hair?
    Community Answer
Try using an egg mask. Just mix plain yogurt with one egg and leave it on for about half an hour, then wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner afterwards.
  • Question
What if my hair is thicker at the top part of my head?
    Mena
    Community Answer
Try weighing your hair down with heavy conditioners. I really don't advise using heat or flat irons.
  • Question
My hair is horrible. It is not only thick, but very frizzy and can't be tamed. I can't cut it short because then it poofs out, and my hair doesn't straighten even if I use hairspray. Any ideas?
    Community Answer
Use shampoo and conditioner, allowing the conditioner to set for ten minutes. Cut your hair, but just get layers; they may help. Use mousse rather than hairspray. Use hair masks, too: try 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil and 2 tablespoons coconut oil, melted in the microwave for 20 seconds and stirred. Apply to wet hair, leave for 30 minutes - 12 hours and shampoo extremely well afterward.
  • Question
My hair is extremely thick. When I try thinning it out it works for a few minutes, but then it is even thicker than before. What can I do?
    Community Answer
You could consider getting layers to make some of it thinner.

My hair is straight and thick. Should I still use straightening techniques to thin it out?
    Community Answer
You can if it isn’t as straight as you want, or use other techniques, such as getting layers.
  • Question
I have thick hair. Should I tell my barber to use thinning shears, will it grow thin and stay thin, or can you tell me what to do to make it thin?
    Community Answer
The bottom will stay thin but the top of your hair will not. If you don’t want thinning shears, you can use hair thinners, getting layers, and other techniques in this article.
  • Question

    Community Answer
Yes, even with cold water you still need a shampoo and conditioner. Those keep your hair healthy.

    What does getting layers mean?
    Community Answer
It means the outer part that is most visible is shorter and the inside part is longer. The hair has different lengths.
