  • Question
    Why are people different?
    Community Answer
Why shouldn't they be? The world is a huge, complex place full of differences. And people are complex, which allows for a great deal of variety. People are different because of differences in their genes, differences in the environment they grew up in, differences in the environments their families/ancestors grew up in, differences in the people and experiences they've been exposed to in life, differences in thoughts they've had and conclusions they've arrived at, and so on. There are endless things that influence people in a variety of ways. The only creatures that are all the same are really simple, mindless ones, like a species of bacteria. Variety goes hand in hand with complexity, and complexity goes hand in hand with intelligence. Variety is a good thing. People just need to learn to accept each other's differences more.

    Community Answer
It can be easy to reduce your negative impact on a personal level. If your parents are more open to things, you can try making your own toothpaste, deodorant, etc (to reduce waste). If they aren't open to things like that, you can try doing it on your own (all the ingredients are pretty cheap and none of it is difficult to make). You can also reduce water use easily. If you shave, turn the shower down or off while shaving. If you wash your face, turn the faucet off while doing that.

  • Question
I am doing a project in my school about how to make this world a better place. What would be some advice for me? What companies should I connect with?
    Community Answer
Start with what you personally think could be better in our world, as schools and teachers will probably appreciate personal input. If you know what should change, do your research on what possible solutions are. Also, try to think out of the box. People often try to change what our socio-economic system looks like, without really making an impact, but don't realise there are alternatives to the current capitalist system. Many companies often don't have the incentive to make the world a better place, but to profit by using (exploiting) its resources. Try looking at small businesses or eco-conscious/socially-aware businesses that do care about the people they employ and use of resources.
  • Question
What products should I avoid? Are there any specific products that are bad for the environment?
    Community Answer
There are always several items that are being evaluated for their impact on the environment - e.g. hydrofluorocarbons that used to be added to deodorant spray cans and led to the ozone layer being depleted. But knowing which chemical is bad for the environment and which one isn't is a difficult task to find out. If you don't want to spend that time, leave it for the agencies, and concentrate on obvious "bad products": excess meat, clothes that cannot be well recycled well (e.g. clothes with sequins or clothes that have to be dyed), poorly built items that you can only use for a short time or don't need. Buy only in moderation.
