You can use a variety of products to mop your floors. You can use a homemade cleaner such as a diluted vinegar and water solution, diluted mild dish soap solution or you can use a store-bought cleaner for your certain floor surface, like Bona for hardwood floors. Regardless of the product choice, be sure to use as little product as possible and as little water as possible to increase the life of your floors.

There are a handful of mops available and many of them can be effective- sponge mop, string mop, or a full mop system. It is usually up to user preference which mop you choose. One of the most important things about mopping is to ensure all crumbs, pet hair, and other particles are off of your floor before you get your floor wet with your mop. Depending on how dirty your floor is to start, you may need to do a couple run-throughs of sweeping and vacuuming to get all these particles up off your floor. Once you start mopping, be sure to fully wring out your mop to use as little water as possible. Work in sections, starting at the back of the room and working your way out of that space.

You should change out your water and cleaning solution depending on how dirty it has become. With relatively clean floors, you may be able to do multiple rooms, but for floors that have not been mopped recently, you may need to change out the water frequently.

Ideally, mop your floors once every couple of weeks. Mopping more often can lead to built-up sticky residue. If your floors get dirty frequently, try dry mopping and sweeping or mopping with plain warm water (without soap or cleaner).

It does not matter which rooms you begin with - it is more important to mop your way out of a room, so you are not stepping on the damp and clean floor you just mopped to exit the room.

  • Question
How do I properly hold a mop?
    Matthew Hester
    Community Answer
To properly hold a mop, first grab the end of the mop handle with your dominant hand. Then, place your non-dominant hand anywhere on the mop handle and slide it up and down until you find a comfortable position. While mopping, make sure to keep your back straight to avoid unwanted strain.
  • Question
I sometimes have soapy water and it leaves steaks on the floor, what can I do?
    Community Answer
There is a few ways you could go about this. For instance, to prevent the streaks you could take a clean mop with just water and run it over the soapy water spots. Another way to prevent the streaks is by taking a fresh towel or paper towel with some water on it and running that over the soapy water spots. To clean the streaks, use any cleaner that works for your type of floor and spray it on the streaks, then wipe it off with a paper towel (wet or dry).
  • Question
How do you mop a very dirty floor?
    Drew Hawkins1
    Community Answer
To mop a very dirty floor, mix together a cleaning solution of 1⁄2 c (120 ml) of apple cider vinegar and 1 US gal (3.8 L) of hot water in a bucket. Add a few drops of dish soap to make the solution soapy, but not too much or it will leave a residue on your floor. Dip a string mop or a cloth mop into the solution, wring out the excess, and mop up the dirt from your floor.
  • Question
Can I use laundry detergent to mop the floor?
    Drew Hawkins1
    Community Answer
Yes, but only add a few drops or so to about 1 US gal (3.8 L) of hot water in a bucket. Too much soap will leave behind a residue on the surface of your floor when you're finished. Add a couple of drops and use your mop to mix them into a soapy solution that you can use to clean your floor.
  • Question
How often should you mop your floors?
    Drew Hawkins1
    Community Answer
If your floors get dirty often because you have children, pets, or lots of foot traffic, then you may need to mop once a week. But, mopping too often can create a sticky residue on the floor that actually traps more dirt and debris. Most houses need to have their floors mopped about twice a month.
