You could lay the photos down on a table and remove two sides of a milk crate or a small box and set the photo down underneath your little platform. Then, set an iPad or camera pointing down. With a setup like this, you can digitize a fairly large collection this way, even if your images aren't necessarily perfect.

I respect the desire to skip this one; it's pretty time-consuming to manually digitize a bunch of photographs. The good news is that there are a lot of services for this where you can mail out your collection and have someone else do this for you.

Take a digital photo! A high-quality digital photo isn't going to be that dramatically different from a scanned image.
  • Question
How can I make the picture bigger for scanning?
    Community Answer
Scan the picture as it is. After that, the result can be zoomed in or out. Quality decreases with increasing size because the pixel numbers remain the same.
  • Question
Can I use an iPhone 6s Plus instead of a computer?
    Community Answer
Yes, any smartphone can scan photos and transfer them to computer or cloud storage. Use a photo scanner app (Examples of iOS apps: Pic Scanner Gold, PhotoScan, Photomyne, Pic Scanner; Android apps: Shoebox, Heirloom). Most of these offer scanning, automatic cropping, editing, organizing and export functions, and save scans as JPEG or PNG files. Resolution may not be as good as with flatbed scanners, but perfectly adequate for most practical purposes. You could also use document scanner apps, but those may save PDF files and lack photo editing tools.
  • Question
How can I send a photo I scanned to Facebook?
    Community Answer
Once the scanned photo has been saved to your computer, you can post it on Facebook like any other photo. Tap Photo/Video button (or Camera icon) in Facebook, navigate to the folder on your computer where the scan is saved, select it and upload.
  • Question
How can I determine the special pixels of a picture while scanning?
    Community Answer
With pixels per inch (PPI) setting. See step 3 [Choose to Preview] in the article above.
  • Question
What is the best DPI to use when sending photos through email?
    Kyra Newsom
    Community Answer
The first thing you need to know is what is the receiver doing with the image. If it is just for a small image, like wallet size, or an image in your email 70-100 DPI. If they want something for display and good detail start at 300DPI and up to 600DPI. You also need to make sure you have a sharp image. Scanning a blurry image at a higher DPI will not make it sharper.
  • Question
What do I do if I can't find my pictures after scanning and saving photos?
    Kyra Newsom
    Community Answer
First, check to see if you changed the name. I have made the mistake of scanning and not changing the name so the last image gets copied over. Check where the program is placing the image and look in that folder. You could also search your computer for the last items added or edited.
