Hi Guys,
I was wondering i anyone was interested in maybe having a wikihow year book for 2017. Obvioulsy I wouldt be able to do it but maybe a staff member or admin may like too organise it. SO my idea was that we can all send in different things such as photos awards and we could even have like a nomination form at the end of next year and we nominate people for best author most improved ect and at the end of next yr, people could maybe send in their details to receive one. Because It could cost a fair bit of money to do all of the ordering and then distributing, there coulde be a small fee for those wanting a hardcopy and then just an email with a digital copy??? If thiis does go ahead, I would be more then happy to make one and then send it to the wikihow team at the end of the yr to approve and send out? I am happy to organise it but i need some more ideas, approval and thoughts.
Interesting idea - I think it would be pretty cool to do in theory… not sure about the logistics of it all though. I don’t think a hardcopy would be feasible, but it might be nice to create a free digital copy to send out to anyone who’s interested. I can’t commit to organizing it, but I can add onto your ideas for potential content:
-
Pages with usernames & profile pictures (high school yearbook style) of users who’d like to be included in the “wikiHow Class of 2017”. Could also have users submit a 1-2 sentence blurb about why we love wikiHow/why we edit here to put underneath each picture/username.
-
wikiHow awards (senior superlatives style) people could nominate others and vote for (again, not sure about the logistics of this).
-
wikiHow highlights of the year. Each interested user could send in a link to the 1 contribution they feel most proud of for the year, whether it’s an edit they did, an article they wrote, etc. Alternatively, they could submit a milestone of some sort (ie. Patrolled 10,000 articles on August 10th). Their milestone or the link to their favourite contribution could be listed beside their name.
I feel like those 3 things don’t require an excessive amount of work to put together, but would still create a nice little yearbook/momento as a reminder of the awesome community of people we have here and the amazing work we’ve done throughout the year.
@Pink_Star
I have spoken to @Anna
about it and she has suggested rather then a year book do like a year in review but Anna when you see this comment, what do you think of pink stars idea because I am more then happy to commit to that and Im happy to organise it???
^ Nice, a Year in Review forum post would certainly be much easier! Maybe it could be similar to Community Achievements of the Week, but it would be Community Achievements of the Year instead
Yes well I was thinking that a year is a long time so it would be to long but i was thinking about a month in review because so many things can hapen each month and i think just like community achievments but to highlight both that and memories and we can have a google form for people to fill out if they wish to have something in the month of review

Have the user avatars of the users who contributed to wikiHow and their name right under.
(I personally don’t really agree with the idea of a ‘wikiHow yearbook’, but I think a year in review (no specific names etc) might be nice. I just made this because I needed to test a Photoshop update.)
Like this?

I really like that

I would be happy to make this around June (when most schools release theirs), if there is a way someone can give me the text for the user boxes (who, what info, etc). This is a big project. Would best be completed by a group of three or four.
I am against this idea, honestly.
IMO a lot of new users and old users edit on wikiHow and pop in and, of course, we’re not going to be able to show every single active user. That can be really upsetting to those users because they’re not in the book. I also find it unnecessary; What way will this improve wikiHow at all? It just seems kind of silly and unnecessary.
I don’t think this is plausible, honestly. There are too many people who contribute to wikiHow, but go inactive, or who would start contributing late, that would get left out. Some people may want to be intentionally left out of the yearbook, and it’d be impossible to ping every single user to ask their permission to be in the yearbook (and given the issue of inactivity or not using the forums, it’d be pretty hard for them to speak up and say they don’t want to be in there). This isn’t a situation like “Why We wikiHow”, where users can choose to contribute their thoughts, but more like something that somebody else decided to do for
everyone else. Personally, I can bet on at least ten of our users in the yearbook being uncomfortable with this
We really also don’t have a lot of consistently active users - even our long-term community members who are still active are often not active enough to give any input on this. In the year I’ve been here, I think the only person who’s been around consistently is Anna, and she’s staff, so I don’t think that counts. In actual schools, it’s actually common for people who aren’t active to not get their picture input or even get left out of the yearbook entirely. It’s really not possible for this to be pulled off feasibly and get everyone in without annoying someone about it.

I support this idea mainly because it is silly! It’s cute, it’s fun, and I love it. Of course we can’t include everyone! But there can be a sign up opportunity and a page to reference all the people who couldn’t participate. My full support. If someone comes to me looking for a partner to make it with, I’m in 110%.

How about we focus on the wikiHow mission instead?
I can’t imagine a year in review or year book actually helping a reader learn how to do something new.
It seems to me that the sole purpose of a yearbook and/or year in review page would be self aggrandizement.
Count me out please.

^I don’t necessarily think it has to be about that. We went to school for the purpose of learning, but we still had field trips, movie days, field days, free days, etc.
Just seems like a fun activity to do with friends.
We are not here to have fun Marina we are here TO WORK AND SERVE THE WIKI Jokes I’m down to do it.
Maybe the term ‘year book’ wasn’t the best phrase to use. Eitherway, creating a card like the one that I created before shouldn’t be too hard - You should be able to get a script that should be able to print out stuff like that. It’s just finding someone with the time, and patience, to do it all.

ItsPugle, you got a copy of the one you made? I think I missed it!

Oop nevermind, I see what you were talking about- I was thinking maybe rows and columns of users that sign up and such, with little highlights of cool edits and such on another page.
What did you have in mind?
That’s a cool idea. I don’t know though honestly about any more ideas, and anyways, I think it would be best if we had some more wikiHaus support/some of the official notes. What Pink_Star said (very top of the thread)is pretty much all my thoughts for it.
