I was an avid user of using templates to ask for others’ help to add pictures to articles. However, it has come to my attention that other users are mistyping the wrong templates on articles to ask for pictures. While Wikivisual has gotten better, and I bet a lot more workload, at making some okay visuals, a reminder to people to reach out to Wikivisual is advised to ask for pictures instead.

Other users are using the wrong templates on articles. The illustrations template has always been to provide hand-drawn drawings to articles designating step-by-step details to those wanting to draw certain things. It utilizes the weaved link to this page right from the top line of the template - designating it’s use as for drawings. But other users see it as with the Wikivisuals that are used, any step-by-step can be the drawing ones - when the pictures template is a lot more fitting to use. See the differences between the articles tagged illustrations (that aren’t really illustrations at all) and those tagged pictures . (I do see another need to fix some articles that are tagged “pictures” which should have been tagged “screenshots” instead, but that’s something we can get down the pike.)

If this idea is seriously taking place, can we please remove the illustrations template or make some way to encourage the use of requesting to Wikivisual or considering using additional people watching for the better pictures template to use - where and when necessary.

I’ve been wanting to start this forums post for over 6 years - always getting too busy to write it up and submit it.

Support.

I see little point in having {{screenshots}}, {{illustrations}}, and {{pictures}} templates. Much of the images are added by WikiVisual nowadays so having these templates is pointless. If images are needed we can communicate that to the author yet still promote the article. We can also contact WikiVisual about adding images/screenshots/drawings and they will happily do it most of the time.

I really support this.

I support this as well. We don’t really need this template that much.

I support it for the same reasons Aasim does. I do, however, think {{screenshots}} should stay.

Sorry about misrepresenting the issue with the screenshots template. I do think that all three templates should leave - since Wikivisual requests kind of have taken over for these templates - and especially with their “no screenshots if it’s not fully promoted/indexed” when the templates can ask for pictures at any time - whether promoted or not, really shows that there needs to be a big change taking place.
