Recently, I noticed that non-admins can change the title and re-categorize their own threads by editing their first comment. They are also entrusted with the right to edit their own comments. Therefore, if they are entrusted with these powers, (on their own threads/comments), I suggest that normal users should be granted the powers to close, sink, or delete their own threads or comments if they so desire. Note that users would only be able to do this to their OWN threads & comments. I suggest that they should NOT have certain rights, however. I suggest they should not be able to announce their threads, as they may take advantage of this, pushing other threads down. I also think they should not be able to re-open threads, as they may take advantage of this to continue a thread closed for specific reasons. Also, they still should not be able to edit or delete posts other then their own. The four rights I am suggesting are: The ability to close their OWN threads The ability to sink their OWN threads The ability to delete their OWN threads The ability to delete their OWN comments This could be useful for many reasons. If a thread they have started has turned into something they didn’t wish, (i.e. an argument) they could close their own thread without needing to wait for administrator assistance. If someone starts a congratulations thread, for example, after a while they may wish to sink their thread so other comments do not bump the thread. If someone accidentally starts a thread or posts a comment, or wishes to delete history of what has been said in their forum or comment, they could delete their threads and comments. These are things that an administrator may do to other threads, however, the user who starts a conversation should have just as much power to end it. This would only happen for threads that they have started. This can help to organize the forums some more, and presents no risk for vandalism. Since they would not be able to close other threads, important threads would not be deleted. Closing a thread would mean that the author of the post doesn’t want to talk about it anymore. There are many other things this hopefully won’t originate into, but this is the gist of it. What do you think?
Really it isn’t your thread anymore when you click post discussion.
I wish we could delete our own posts.
Seems like a good idea to me.
Yes, this is a common sense idea that I had wanted to suggest.
Hmm… I’m trying to remember what forums looked like before I had admin rights. Perhaps someone could correct me if I’m remembering wrong (it’s been too long!). I think when we had the old forums regular editors had more rights as to forum threads. I’m pretty sure you could delete your own posts, but not threads. But not the other stuff you suggested. There wasn’t a sinking option anyway. Anyway, I could see support for some of these suggestions._The ability to close their OWN threads The ability to sink their OWN threads The ability to delete their OWN threads The ability to delete their OWN comments_Delete their own comments… Yes, I could see this happening. I don’t see a real problem with sink and close either. But delete their own threads – I could see this one abused. A lot, actually. Because a thread isn’t really your property, and just because the owner of the thread does not like the way a discussion is going, doesn’t mean the discussion is finished or unnecessary when the originator decides to delete it. If such a tool was not used responsibly, people might feel that a thread was deleted when they still wanted to say something on it, and this would lead to the creation of lots of unnecessary new threads just to continue where we left off – which would make the deletion of the original thread unnecessary, as the argument did not stop. As a side note, you may not have noticed this, but admins very rarely use the deleting thread button anyway. Just closing it is preferred for everything except outright spammy, trolling threads.
You do have the ability to delete your comments. Just hit “Edit” and clear it out. Other than that, I’d rather not give everybody those rights, because once a thread has more people in it than just the original author, it becomes everyone’s thread, and should be treated as such.
Best reason to always use the quote feature. I’d like to allow people to review the original material - not the original, then see replies, then a new revised original post.
But wouldn’t it say Body Required?

I agree completely. I’m just noting that it is possible. However, I agree, upon further thought, that it’s a good idea to always quote what you’re responding to.
Yes, plus even if you could clear it out, you’d still have the space where your comment used to be.

Like Mal said, this can cause some amount of disruption and confusion.
From what I can see, it is currently impossible to give regular users these abilities on Vanilla forums.
