We have a lot of articles about dressing as a boy or girl, and it would be nice to consolidate them! The new category “Gender Presentation” would most likely go under LGBT, which is where most of the articles in this list are now.

This new category would encompass

  • Passing (for transgender people)
  • Cross-dressing (where a person dresses up as a different gender just for fun)
  • Drag (a form of professional entertainment involving cross-dressing)

“Gender Presentation” is the best title I could think of to cover these things, which can have overlap in praxis (although the reasons behind doing them are often quite different). Of course, I’m cisgender and no expert, and I’m open to any title suggestions!

(It strikes me how few of these articles are written with actual trans people in mind. I hope that in 2016 we can provide more resources for our transgender readers!)

My vote’s in! I’m surprised we don’t already have this.

I’m uneasy about grouping all these articles together. Some may belong in such a category, if they deal directly with LGBT/trans/gender issues. Some, however, like  wikihow.com/Look-Like-a-Girl-for-a-Prank- (for-Boys), and the others categorized under “Tricks and Pranks” or “Personal Care and Style” probably do not.

That is why not all of these are written with trans people in mind; not all of them are intended for this audience.

We need to be careful when inferring the tone of articles, especially when it comes to categorization.

Hmm well I’m genderqueer and I think you could change it to Gender Expression instead of Gender Representation.

As a transgender boy, I’m in full support of having a section specifically for gender presentation! I agree with Iso, though - the ones that are classed as being pranks or personal care shouldn’t be logged under this category. It’s a little tough to find the proper articles on transgender subjects when the only category for those subjects is LGBT!

“Gender Expression” is a good name too! I’m glad that people who have personal experience are weighing in on this.

WikiHow has way too few articles on transgender issues. As a cis girl, I don’t think it’s really my place to start more. But if you ever need a hand editing or getting illustrations, feel free to ask!

I’m pretty surprised you don’t already have this, I think it’s a great idea but gender expression is a better name!

@Kcorn7264 To clarify, it’s not that we “don’t have” the articles. These articles do exist. What we “don’t have” is them all categorized together in this manner.

I started having a look around at open category requests, with a focus on the larger potential categories (see here for reasoning about why - for now, at least, prioritizing the bigger ones).

That in mind, the larger of these seems like one that could provide a pretty good “home” for some of our LGBT focused titles. I started us off with this category under the suggested name  - https://www.wikihow.com/Category:Gender-Expression

I think Jeff is right that we probably want to leave pranks etc out of this, though? There’s room for our advice to grow in terms of actually addressing transgender and LGBT issues, for sure, and hopefully this category could help with that, as long as we keep it focused on real LGBT issues. And I may have gotten some of the reshuffling wrong! If I’ve either missed any of the topics or added ones that shouldn’t be in there, please do feel free to adjust it!

I’ll close for now so I can tick off what’s already looked at in the forum posts - but feel free to post a-fresh or reopen if there’s more we should do here.
