Some of y’all may have noticed this already, but our wikiHaus engineering wizards released a bit of a design change today, on the log-in buttons. This shouldn’t change actual log-in functioning, but does change the look and process a little. I just wanted to explain why:

For starters, the change gets us up-to-date in using the most recent Google/FB logos. However, the real need for the change came about because browsers are starting to require the use of a secure connection for anything with a password field. In order to comply with best practices there, we’re moving the username/password fields themselves to the secure sign-in page. Unfortunately if you’re logging in with a wikiHow account, this does mean that you have to take an extra click instead of signing in from the drop-down menu. We’re sorry about that - and aren’t such fans of doing that extra click ourselves! However, without this change, readers would be met with some confusing browser warnings when they landed on wikiHow. Even though all edits and messages are public here anyway, we want to follow best practices for security as much as possible, too.

In the long run, we’re hoping to be able to implement the use of HTTPS on all pages, which might allow log-in from the drop-down menu again. That goal is a little ways off just yet, though, since there are some potential downsides for speed/loading that the engineers are still working out. So for now, if you want to avoid the extra click, I’d suggest just bookmarking the sign-in page directly, instead of the home page or another link - or using social sign-in for an easier log-in, if you’d like.  Orrrrrr you could be like me and just never sign out, ever ever:slight_smile:

Oh my god, how terrible - we might have to click an extra time! What a travesty! How unjust! It’s so much extra work, how dare the engineers inconvenience us? @Anna , I hope you hear our rage and fury at the injustice of having to click one more time than we used to.:stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for the heads-up. I never sign out either, so this doesn’t really affect me… but we still appreciate the heads-up!

Oh God I hate this change. But I’ll get used to it after a long while. It could be either months or years down the line before I think this might work. We’ll see. I don’t generally sign out often, but sometimes my cookies get cleared and then out goes any places I’ve logged in to including the site!

I really like this design! It’s cleaner and, as Anna said, more secure:smiley:
