About 4 years ago I had a very active account as a 15 year  old =)  I quit due to GCSE related work.

In my time on wikiHow, I’ve noticed just how many people have used google images of random people on their profile. Lying about names is sort of okay, as it is pretty much a precaution I guess, but using others images and saying it is you is illegal (I think).

I have my suspicions about a few current active people in the community, but I don’t like confrontations.

Can anyone else agree with me?

I’m not a big fan of people taking images that aren’t theirs and using them as profile images. As an artist, I know the basics of copyrights, and it’s not good to take an image that doesn’t belong to you and use it however you please. (I drew my own profile.) I’m personally cool with people using my art, as long as it’s not making money and they credit me.

I go on the internet under the name “Luna Rose” for safety purposes. Online, I am open about my disabilities, and this could make me less likely to be hired for a job if I used my real name. There’s also the issue of stalking, which women are particularly vulnerable to, and is why doxxing is a big deal.

Most likely, people who take something from Google Images are doing so because they like the picture, and they feel that it represents them in some capacity. (For example, this is why many people use random anime pics as avatars, or Rainbow Dash pictures, etc.) For example, they might have a picture of a whale because they like whales, not because they want others to think that they are a whale.

They aren’t necessarily trying to make you believe that they are the exact person in the image. Instead, the image speaks to them, so they use it. (In my opinion, they should get permission from the owner first and link back. But there’s not much I can do about it.)

If someone is feeding false information in an attempt to deceive someone, e.g. trick them into revealing personal information, then this is a serious problem. Otherwise, it’s people disregarding copyrights and/or good manners towards artists.

If you’re wondering what to do, try asking “Could you tell me about your profile picture? I’m curious.” This should give you a clear answer.

I don’t know laws about trying to pass off someone else’s image as their own, so I can’t speak to that. If the person readily admits that they did not create the image, or that they’re the one who posted the original image (e.g. I am the same artist who posted my profile picture on deviantART), then this may answer your question.

@MissLunaRose I can understand the faking of names as I expressed previously, but what I mean by random google images is self-images (selfies) from others social media and not giving any credit, and trying to pass it as themselves. Thank you =)

That’s certainly true. I totally agree with you, this has become a trend nowadays. And it also decreases media relibility, as well. But as you mentioned previously, privacy also counts but Faking yourself and Enhancing Privacy are totally different, isn’t it?

However, my profile pic is really mine. That’s why I’ve cut it quarter for privacy reasons.  I earlier used profile pics of Maleficent, but I never claimed it to be mine.

There are a small amount of contributors using fake images saying things like… my sister just took this photo of me.  I find it rather sad that they have to make up totally fake bios for themselves including a photo that has been taken from a website, but because someone makes up a fake bio and posts a fake photo that doesn’t mean that there is something bad about them. Everyone here at wikiHow is entitled to have anonymity and as an older wikiHowian I always urge our younger contributors to be very careful of the personal information they give to people they do notknow.  How do you know that the person with the image of a young teen is the person you are actually  talking to? It is all about being internet and safety aware just like any other website where you interact with people you have never met and don’t know!

I completely agree that it does NOT make them a bad person, but I still think, as you do, that it is rather sad (and probably illegal) that people steal others identities. Posting this discussion actually made me rethink having a selfie as my profile picture, so I did actually change it, and I am just waiting for it to update on the forums. I feel that if users wish to be anonymous, creating a fake name is fine, but perhaps instead of stealing random images it could be a picture of a flower or the galaxy, anything along those lines.

I completely agree. I feel that faking your name can come under enhancing privacy as it pretty much ensures our safety from stalkers and such, but stealing others pictures and claiming it’s you is illegal, I think (Identify Theft, I saw a film-- comedy, involving it).

As SarahB said, it is actually rather sad that people feel they have to fake their identity in such a kind community.

And also, I think I remember someone called Nedifier, I’m not sure =)

@ BellaBee   wikiHow does have a policy on this!

wikihow.com/wikiHow:User-Image-Policy

@SarahB Thank you for sharing that policy =) Though it’s a shame so many people feel they have to go against it, isn’t it. Especially as we have such a lovely community that NEVER judges anyone.

I always keep my profile picture as something like friendship quotes, holding hands like this one, sceneries and flowers. I don’t have trust on my tongue and at any time I might slip out the picture is mine, so I take these safety precautions.

I made a discussion similar to this one. While it might not be completely stopped, I have seen some action taken against users with copyrighted pictures!

I edited this pic many times but I think I should change it if it violates policies.

You’re almost certainly right, people have used fake pics on here for years :p. Also I used to be around about 3-4 years ago but under the name Nedifier, we might’ve chatted back then heh :).
