Welcome to the latest wikiHaus Lab update! Here’s what’s happening for Jan 26th:
What’s happening? The team has added some new sections to the horizontal Table of Contents, like videos, Q&A and tips. You can see an example here
.
It seems that this type of Table of Contents is going well, but I’ll keep you posted on any further updates!
What’s happening? We are working on removing AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages) that load on small devices. The team is currently testing a group of articles to check that the pages still load as expected, and if so, we will be removing all amp pages. This won’t likely be noticeable to the average reader or wikiHowian, but will be good for our site moving forward.
What’s happening?Intra-article polls. The product team is working on an experiment to add short polls to the end of articles, which recommends other wikiHow articles to readers based on their answers. This ties into the next section…
Idea Request:The team is thinking about ways to increase the amount of time readers spend on wikiHow to help readers get the most out of their wikiHow experience - perhaps adding more interactivity or links for readers to check out. Do you have any suggestions of features we could add or whacky ideas we could try implementing to help increase how long someone spends on wikiHow?

On the horizontal TOC, the video is listed before the Community Q&A, but in reality the video is under the Q&A. Also, is there any way to see the quick summary with the new horizontal TOC, or are those going away?

I believe the order is slightly different from the sections on the page on purpose - they are experimenting with order based on what content could potentially be more likely to answer the primary intent of the reader.
Quick summaries haven’t been added to the horizontal ToC as part of this experiment. I’m not sure if they will be in the future, but will let you know if I hear more.

I know you like the horizontal ToC! I’ve got my fingers crossed for you, but don’t have the ability to order it to be on all articles just yet

One idea that I had that may keep people on the site longer was in the You Might Also Like section, something could be added that says something like, “Check out other articles in the (category) category” with a link to the article’s category page. I think that this may be helpful because right now the only way to get to an articles category page from the article is through a small link in the top left corner of the article, which many people probably don’t notice. So I think that adding a more visible link would make it easier for readers to find the category pages, which would then allow them to find more articles and stay on the site for longer.

A Step Editor for editing the steps individually would also be a good idea!

One you could add could be a live help-ticket/QnA type-thing. Basically they can submit if they have issues with article instructions and someone could pop on and try to help them, or just a section for troubleshooting, so that creators and editors could edit. A lot of people use tips as comments, too. Maybe comment sections (other than discussion, people might not know how to navigate there?)

Is this the year we finally get to see the much-requested “save articles as favourites within wikiHow” idea come to life?

Fingers crossed about the chance of enabling custom article titles to all logged in users!
I like the horizontal ToC! Thanks for sharing .
