This time, Windows Defender -> Microsoft Defender.

I remember a couple of years ago, musical.ly became TikTok, so we had to update our categories and all that good stuff.  Now, Windows Defender is now Microsoft Defender, so we need to update that as well in the title as well as in the description.

I learned that because I was using Windows Security and it called Windows Defender “Microsoft Defender”.  So I guess that is one new change.

Yes, I heard that they renamed it recently. But, Microsoft is really slow to push out the new update that changes the name, so maybe we should wait until most computers have received the new update before we make the changes. Microsoft announces update statistics every now and then, so we will be able to tell when most computers have received the update.

Maybe we could start changing the name in the article text, and then latter, we can rename the articles.

@Awesome-Aasim , I would suggest coordinating with Jayne on a plan of attack to ensure we don’t make a rush to judgement on the best way to move forward.

Sounds like a good idea.

I’ll probably get started by replacing all the names “Windows Defender” with “Microsoft Defender” in AWB (taking care not to break wiki markup).  For articles that are for older versions of Windows 10 or Windows 8.1/8, I will skip those.  This is something that is somewhat minor, but we care for the accuracy of our work.

Maybe an admin with AWB can move the titles.  Of course, I am not going to rush this task in AWB as I do not want to, well, mess up and break dozens of files.  But at least it is a good starting point before changing the title.

@JayneG thoughts on tackling this?

@Awesome-Aasim I appreciate you looking out for the accuracy of wikiHow articles. Let me look into this over the week and we can coordinate a plan on how to best update the articles. Thanks for your patience and holding off for now :)

@Awesome-Aasim after reviewing this with Chris H, we think this will be a two-stage process. As @R2_d2000 mentioned, the updated name may not have rolled out for everyone yet, and looking on Google Trends, data shows that people are still searching for “Windows Defender” over “Microsoft Defender” (you can see that here .) The first step will be updating the content, then later on we can update the titles.

For now, the action item is to update the text; changing Windows Defender to Microsoft Defender - but there is a caveat! It would be good to note that it was formally known as Windows Defender, so in introductions, let’s make sure that the first one says Microsoft Defender (formally known as Windows Defender) and then refer to it as Microsoft Defender for the rest of the article. Do you think you might be able to work on that?

Then moving forward we can keep an eye on trends, and once it becomes an equally prominent name that’s searched for, we can change the titles. We wouldn’t want to change the titles if people are still searching for help on Windows Defender, or they might not find us! If you are open to it, perhaps you could work on a list of all pages that will need to be retitled down the line?

That sounds like a plan.

Wow, that was easy.  There are only eight titles that have “Windows Defender” in them out of the 44000+ in the entire “Computers and Electronics” category.  There may be other titles discussing Windows Defender as well, like “how to remove a virus” or articles like that.

  • Access Windows Defender in Windows 8 - skipped, Microsoft Defender I believe is only in Windows 10 May 2020 update.  This is Windows 8.
  • Disable Windows Defender on Windows Vista - skipped, Microsoft Defender I believe is only in Windows 10 May 2020 update.  This is Windows Vista.
  • Report an Unsafe Website on Windows Defender - done
  • Run Windows Defender Offline - done
  • Scan Using Windows Defender - done
  • Turn Off Windows Defender in Windows 10 - done
  • Turn On Windows Defender - done
  • Use Windows Defender Application Guard - done
Not like TikTok, which had a good hundred or so.  Maybe we do not need AutoWikiBrowser after all.

I think @JayneG ’s approach is a good one.  Rename later, at least we can update these 8 right away.

Well that does make things a little easier - looks like a good manual update!

Okay, well, looking at the first two articles, those refer to older versions of Windows, where the app is still known as “Windows Defender”.  The other six should be an easy update.  We will do phase II once we know that one is searched more than the others.

That brings our list down to six.

Um… I don’t think I dug deep enough.  I completed the above eight with the titles, but we have 357 more pages to go.  Looks like I will need to carry in the best automated editing tool - AutoWikiBrowser.

wikihow.com/special:Search?search=Windows+Defender

Of course, the lower queries where there is no Windows Defender I will probably skip.
